Just a quick question, gen 6 GT does anyone know what the markings on the petrol gauge mean in terms of how many litres are left cos ive found it takes ages to go halfway, but then rapidly goes to the last line.

Any ideas on what others have found would be great.

Cheers

i could squeeze 25 to 30 miles out of mine when the light began to flash , when it lit up all the time is when i'd fill up. but yes it does go down quick from half , i think tank holds 60 litres or so.

think youll find most gauges on most cars do that, i wouldnt worry. reserve is normally a gallon on most cars.

Yeah the top half of my tank (68l) is worth more like 60-70% I reckon. very depressing when you think that you have been drivin quite sensibly only to find that once it hits half tank you may as well drill a hole in the bottom of it!! But hey the price we pay...

I worked out that the top quater was approx 20 litres then slightly less to half and so on and so on. Odd considering the spacing of the 3/4 marks on the gauge etc.

topped up the other day, the first main line to full was 40 litres :), so thats odd, the last bit is 20 litres. So i think the petrol gauge is full of crap. :)

I know mine is. lol

The little petrol pump lights up even though on the gauge it says I have quater of a tank left.

Whats that all about or is it a celica thing?

somethings not right with it then . mine came on right about under the last line on the dash , flashed for a while then stayed on at the death. the gt4 i drove was the same too.

:bookworm: Think they just like to warn you before you go near the red!!!

If a car is quite old then there will be a lot of "crap" in the bottom of the tank.

Best way is to get to 1/4 of a tank then refill

Does'nt fuel injection pump the fuel around the car back into the tank constantly. If so that would mean there should not be much crap in the bottom.

i've repaired lots of fuel tanks , never seen any crap in the bottom that would make the gauge give false readings though

Even more so on Fuel injection cars. Because the fuel gets circulated the filter picks up most of the rubbish. I think there must be variations with the senders. It`s quite easy to bend a float arm on intallation and consequently this would give false readings.

As far as i am aware with the MR2 tanks.. the lower 1/2 of the tank is alomost live a V shape as it gets narrow towards the end.. which would explain why the needle drops really quickly..

I wonder if the same is true for the Celica.. I used to own 2 Celica 5th gens and i think i had the same issuse..

Hope that helps..

I never did get that reason people give of there being crap at the bottom of a fuel tank - doesn't the fuel get sucked from the bottom first?? So the crap would go out before the fuel.

Every car I have ever owned has always been top biased - I was told this was to make the guage more accurate towards the bottom end. If you think about it - you don't need much accuracy at the top end, so if it's a 60 litre tank and the top half is 40 litres and the bottom half is 20 litres - then the bottom half is twice as accurate as the top half - which is more important.

Not sure how they do it - either the tank gets thinner at the bottom anyway - or they bias the float arm
