Need more info. What year, What engine, HAve you tried re setting ecu? When was the gasket done? As much info as possible please. Tho at first sound it could be an air leak. A big one at that.

It is a 1993 K reg Celica GTi

Head was finished Friday. Battery was disconnected for 2 days.

Any ideas on how to reset the ecu?

One of the breather hoses and the air flow meter was not connected when i got it back.

It feels like the timing is out and keeps back firing.

take out the efi fuse 15 seconds then put it back in.

should be in the fuse box down from the Battery on the pass side wing.

dunno what it will do , but worth a try.

I doubt that resetting the ECU will have a great deal of effect in this case.

I recently did my head gasket and it ran like a pig when I got it back together. It turned out to be an air leak (throttlebody gasket was wrong shape and letting in air so I removed it and used liquid gasket) and dodgy HT leads (once replaced it ran fine).

HAve you verified that the cams (timing) are set correctly (a couple of teeth out can affect the running of the engine). To check this you need to set the engine to 0 deg TDC at the crank pulley then check that the timing mark on each cam is directly adjacent to the notch on the top timing gear backplate.

YOu say that a pipe was disconnected when you got it back, are there any others disconnected? Check the others for airleaks incase they split during the removal/refitting of the head, at this age the rubber will be prone to splitting at the ends (wrap a bit of insulating tape around it if so.

Hope this helps

also i noticed my throttle sensor has been snapped but not straight off could this b the problem

I understand your dissapointment. But it seems to me that whoever did your car made a pigs ear of it. Take it back and tell them to fix it properly.

As the previous posts have said, it could be a split hose, damaged or unplugged sensor, an air leak, cam timing or a multitude of other things. Remember, they have had half the engine apart, and most of the sensors etc will have been unplugged.

It does sound like you have some sort of electrical/sensor problem, that is what the engine light is signalling. What you can do is check the fault code, and it will help narrow it down.

To do this you need to locate the diagnostic connector (sounds like you have a gen 5, it is on the left side of the engine bay near the suspension turret) and short out 2 pins with a bit of wire or paper clip. The pins are TE1 and E1. Then turn on the ignition (don't start the engine), the check engine light will flash a sequence, to represent a 2 digit code. Count the first lot of flashes, then there is a pause and count the second lot of flashes. The codes are probably on this forum (use the search function), or search in google. If you can't find them, post back here with your 2 digit fault number and we will look it up for you.

Oh, and if you do find out what is faulty, you have better bargaining power when you take the car back because you'll be able to tell them about the fault code, and what the problem is. They are more likely to take you seriously if you have done this, than if you just go back and say "it's not right". But don't start unbolting things etc until you have been back to the garage else they could use the excuse that you must have caused it yourself.

Goodluck.
