Mx-5

Hey guys,

I've had my thinking cap on. And while the Yaris TS s a great car... I'm a little impatient. I wanna new car!! Now my ideal purchase would be an MR2 turbo - but that's gotta wait till I'm over the grand old age of 21.

Well, you've read the title so you know what I've been looking at. Now let me state that this is not a choice because of its aggressive looks (ha!!) or its credibility (girl car! but then again so is the Yaris), it would simply be for fun factor. I've read up on them, my mum's had one, and top gear have given it nothing but praise (jeremy's favourite "british" sports car ). They are low riding, rear wheel drive, nippy, and handle like they are on rails.

I wouldn't really do anything to it, maybe get a new exhaust (same size just stainless), lower it a bit, and maybe some cheap alloys off eBay.

You can pick up a 1.8i Mk1 for around £4k to £5k or a 1.8i Mk2 for £6k-£7k. I'm hoping the Yaris would fetch £5.5k to £6k so it'd be the same sort of price. I'd rather go for the mk1 to save me money (plus get leather seats, a/c, etc...), but the mk2 is nicer looking with better interior.

Just a stopping gap for one year, but who knows, I may like it enough to keep it! And then again I may just go 'what was i thinking!' and stick with the Yaris.

Yeah I can see myself getting one.

Not.

They are lovely cars, admitedly, I driven my mum's too... great handling and performance aint to bad, good ride, hard to fault really.

But it is a womans car, blatantly.. Sure the Yaris is feminine, but an mx5!

sorry to burst the macho atmosphere in here guys, the yaris is predominantly marketed towards women... just look at it, hardly the most manly of cars.

So to say/think (because I know you're all thinking it, even if you don't say it) that the mx-5 is a girls cars is laughable really.

I quite like the mx-5s myself, but £5k+ will buy you a jolly nice rev3 MR2 N/A

Have a drive of a rev3 mr2 and a mk1 mx5... insurance should be about the same :)

Then just buy whichever you prefer :D

Incidentally the mr2 is quite a feminine shape as well, but then... aren't all well designed cars a bit feminine? :bye:

this mx5 feminine stuff is crap... it's just as feminine as Honda S2000 and Lotus Elise...

all of the best reviews out there are made by men and they all give the car great ratings... are all those reviewers !Removed! or something?

Oh my god. And I thought you guys were intelligent.

Lets start the counter debate ;)

Woman's car? Yes - but so what? I drive a Yrais already, and I see a LOT more women driving Yari then I see women driving MX5's. I'm not lying when I say that - I do see more men in MX5's.

To earl's silly comment. The Yaris is more popular than an MX5 - AND! - the MX5 isn't trying to be a sports car like porsche's etc... it is supposed to be one of the most fun cars around (even petrol head jeremy says so) with amazing handling! Its just a nippy little runner.

Right, thats over with...

Also thank you for the suggestion of trying out an MR2 N/A, Not a bad idea, although they are slower and not sure if they'll be as fun to drive. But deffiently want a turbo one when i'm over 21!

actually m8 i don't think the mr2 is slower

0-60 of around 7.5-8 seconds

no doubt the mx-5 will be more fun though, it's much lighter than the heavy mr2 :)

if you like them, go for it - i'll still be your friend, even if the rest of TOC casts you to the shadows for even considering leaving the big T :)

LOL!

Good to know someone isn't blinded by how much of a fashion statement the car is.

I think the 0-60 times of both cars are pretty much the same. I'll deffiently try both out though.

And you neva know, I may just keep the Yaris.

Personally i would go for an MR2 Roadster.

OK the MR2 is a harder car to drive than the MX5.. but the MR2 is a slightly faster car..(according to our friend.. or should that be fiend.. Jeremy C). I also feel that in the looks dept the MR2 Roadster winds no question.

Once my Yaris is paid for i only had it 6 mnths and its fantastic... I will be getting the Roadster at around 17 grand it can't be bad.

but once you're paying around £17k you can afford the new mx-5 as well... and in every review the mx5 seems to come out on top

i remember the last time they had all the sports cars on 5th gear they actually preferred the mx5 to the Z4 ... simply for the fun factor :)

Different cars for different people :D
