it's keeps the car in 3rd gear instead of changing up to 4th (means less MPG but more toque).

better for hilly countryside

Yep. Not many manuals with O/D around nowadays. Also if your in 4th (O/D on) And you want increased engine braking - Downhill for instance. All you have to do is switch O/D off and hey presto 3rd gear. :thumbsup:
