Cts Gear Change

Not sure if this has been asked before, but do any other Cts drivers find the gear change from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd heavy and noisy at times, it's like the gears are crashing in. To avoid it I have to be really careful and almost pause in neutral and then gently push it into gear, which I don't think you should have to do on a modern car.

It isn't on all of the time, but quite a lot and it's frustrating as it takes the enjoyment away as it's not a smooth drive when it happens.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I know that the Corolla T-Sport's gearbox is not one of its strong points, I had the same sort of problem with mine it felt very clunky all the time!

I here the TTE quickshift helps sharpens it up a bit though!

Thanks for that Nick, I may bear that in mind.

p.s. Hows the new car, broken it in yet? One of my mates has just got a 54 Type R and he loves it.

Not planning on wrecking this one, mind you that wasnt the plan for the last one either!

I have learnt you have to give a car with no driver aids 100% respect, but I am really enjoying it, its a great car!

I also have difficulties to change gears in my CTS.

I am afraid there is a limited range of clutch adjustment.

(1) If the disk is set to slip easily then you have frequent clutch burning problem (burning smells have been reported by many owners).

(2) If it is set to engage fast then it does not allow you to change easily: it does not tolerate even few millimeter deviations from the COMPLETELY FULL depression. Such slight deviations may be due to variations in the hardness of our shoes, the point and angle of contact of our foot with the pedal (e.g. fingers is a softer point !), etc.

I looked in the Australian site and there is a serious discussion about gear changing problems. However, I did not see any reports for burning smells and thus I tend to the above conclusion, which is also supported by my experience.

Hey all

Not all of the australian spec cars have shift problems. My car doesn't but there is quite a few who do. Toyota Australia have basically told us that the problem is caused by misuse or driver error. That's not the case. Some have fixed the problem by replacing the clutch/pressure plate and flywheel with TOMS/TRD items and that has seemed fix it completely. even those who have just replaced the clutch assembly have had next to no troubles with the shift. Some owners are still arguing with Toyota while others hvae given up and are paying to get it fixed themselves but Toyota won't warrant any aftermarket parts being used. Bit of a catch 22 situation but it's a problem tht needs to be solved. If you have the shifting problem then complain about from your side of the world as we are doing from our side of the globe. if we whinge about it loud enough together Toyota will have to stand up and listen sooner rather than later.

Cheers SILVABULLIT. :D

Looks like Toyota have turned a blind eye to the few little niggles that the T-Sport Corolla has!

I dont understand why Toyota dont address the problems and keep owns happy!

We should be fair with Toyota. I do not expect everything ideal in a medium cost performance car: performance/reliability/convenience/easy to use/comfort.

The CTS clutch/gear shifting could be much better but is within the operationable limits. Of course, this is a point for improvement by Toyota.

There is no excuse for Toyota for the rattles.

My old CTS loved a rattle, I managed to get rid of all of them with a weekends work foam pads etc!

If you have a rattle let me know and I should be able to help you sort it, my Civc Type-R does not rattle at all! :)

  • 4 weeks later...

After some long term observations, I think my shifting problems appear at low temperatures (below 10C). For example, today at 17C everything was fine.

I guess that something should be wrong with the gearbox oil.

I experience a poor 2nd to 3rd shift only when the engine and transmission is cold.

Once warmed up it's fine.

However the clutch does bite very low and adjustment would no dought help or cure this.

That said I feel that the clutch is set up as Toyaot intended and I am not going to change it unless the problem remains after the gearbox is warmed properly.

Warming during driving helps but, in my case, most positive effect happens when I have stopped the car/engine for 15-20min and then I start it again while it is still warm.Somehow the lubrication effect is improved by the driving interruption. Perhaps the gearbox temperature increases because there is no air flow.

I need to figure out what type of oil was used in September when my clutch was replaced.

Concerning any clutch adjustment, I would expect essential improvement by slightly moving upwards (e.g. 3-5mm) the pedal position of disk disengagement. I do not know though if the mechanics could do such fine work without side effects.
