Sticky Brake Caliper

Recommended Posts

Driving along yesturday and i hear like a screeching noise, put down the window and notice that is coming from my car.

The screech appears to come form the back left wheel, upon breaking the noise goes away and when i dont break the noise is there.

However this morning the noise was not there but when driving home it came back.

I think it may be the caliber but not sure.

any ideas?

thanks

Paul

Could be one of three things.

1] Exsessive amount of dust in and around brake components. Solution - remove wheel and caliper and clean out with compressed air and/or metholated spirits. Replace copper grease and replace caliper and wheel.

2] Brake pads are low and the "Low Pad Indicator" spring is touching the disc. Solution replace pads. Also check disc for wear and tear and replace as neccesarry.

3] Sticking caliper. Solution repairable with a caliper service kit available from most better motor factors.

Most of the above work is really easy and can be done by yourself. Although if you are in doubt get it to a Mr Clutch or Quikfit or the likes and they will be able to sort it out no probs but charge for the labour - still cheaper than MrT

The is a "How-To" with step-by step instructions and photos in the Wrokshop Submission section of the site.

Hello System-G,

Where can I find this how-to ?. I can't seem to find the 'workshop submission' section.

"The is a "How-To" with step-by step instructions and photos in the Wrokshop Submission section of the site."

Some background on my problem ...

I had the rotors and brakes replaced with after-market ceramic ones when the car had 104K miles on it ... just to be safe.

A week after the new parts were put in ...

1) I hear the squealing/grinding at low speeds especially when I ease off the accelerator.

2) I hear the squeaking sounds when I turn the steering wheel on highways (to change lanes etc) at about 60 MPH.

3) I hear thumping sounds when accelerating to 45 MPH from lower speeds, and when deaccelerating from 20 MPH.

My mechanic has tried eveything including bleeding the brakes, grinding the pads and rotors.

As a last resort, I had the calipers, pads and rotors replaced with OEM parts from a Toyota dealer, and still have the sticky brakes :-(.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Rags_02.

so the calipers are fine - are the discs and/or pads the correct size............ sounds like something is rubbing - any way you can measure your uprated discs and pads and compare with oe discs and pads? good luck

Hello ae102,

These are brand new OEM parts (pads, rotors and calipers) that I put on the car. Guess they are up to Toyota/Corolla specs. The previous set of parts were after-market ones; I replaced them with the OEM ones.

My latest guess is that the brake hose (the 'rubber' ones that run to the calipers) are clogged up.

Anybody have other ideas ?

Regards
