I am looking at buying a Supra Mk3 from somewhere in England. However, i am concerned about how prone to rust and corrosion they are. If anyone can tell me what sort of condition a British Mk3 Supra would be in, please tell me about it.

To make it a little more specific, i'm lookinng for a car under £2000, so thats about 1988.

Thank You

£2000 should get you a semi decent G or H or J plate depending on how lucky you are.

rust is the rear arches only, nowhere else rusts on the cars. Later J and K plates had cured the rust problem and you will see very little rust on a K plate, if any.

They are prone to blowing head gaskets though...

The UK owners club forum is at mkiiisupra.net , plenty of info on there..

Our J reg still has the wheel arch issue :(

The only reason they ever rust is because people don;t clean the mud out from under their wheel arches!!!!!

My '88 import is totally rust free

you've been unlucky, or its possibly a early J.

The time they got rid of the rust problem was also the time when they fitted the 10 speaker stereo etc, so if yours has the 10 speaker setup then it also has the extra rust proofing...

Thank you to everyone.

So is there any rust visible in the engine bay or on the outside of the car and is the rear wheel arch issue a problem?

Thank you

on what car? didnt we just go over this ? :bookworm:

but for the sake of clarity :D ... no .. rust isnt a problem on the mk3 supra apart from the rear arches on some models, mainly pre-91 . But it isnt major rust and the car wont fall apart because of it...

Engine bay rust? you've lost me there....

Yep just to clarify further the rust on the rear arches is not a big issue anyway. If you catch it early enough it can be dealt with for not much money.

The problem arises because there is a lip on the rear arch where all the road debris sits, slowly rotting away the metal. If you have a MK3 without rear wheel arch rust then its worth giving these ledges a clean once in a while and maybe a coating of waxoyl or something similar.

Never seen much rust on other areas of MK3's unless they have been abused.
