Hi,

Just a quick question, Satellite Navigation does it Require Subscription??

  B)

No it doesnt, however it's advisable to get updated discs every few years with up to date maps on it which are not that cheap, but other than that it's free to use.

Have to say that I'm not overly impressed with it though.

Spefically, even though mine is a 2002 model, the system seems to think that my friends house is in the middle of a big field, even though its o na medium sized housing estate built 7+ years ago.

Its also very irritating that you have to stop the car to use it. presumably due to safety ground but talk about nanny state.

Classic situation that satnav might be good for is when you're in the middle of a strange city and you want to head towards home, so it would be great if the passenger could quickly select 'home' while you're on the move.

Yes I know I could pull over but why should I have to.

Does anyone know how to disable this irritating safety feature ? Is there a micro switch to trigger when you're in gear or in neutral ?

yea it's pretty rubbish you can't set a route while driving but the TNS manual say's it's possable, but not accurate at speed?

gona dig the user manual out again and have another read at it :D

still, every time i've used it, it has taken me right to the door of the address i put in. :P

I asked to my Toyota dealership to disable this feature (really very annoying), as the Avensis with manual trasmission doesn't have it. They did cut a wire in the automatic trasmission (I don't know precisely where) and now I can open, close and tilt the screen while driving. Best of all, they did this under warranty and completely free of charge!

I had a manual Avensis and it still had the problem with not being able to set Sat Nav when moving.

Manual say's

"MENU operation is disabled when vehicle is moving at a speed of 8Km/h or greater (except VOLUME and DELETE DESTINATION)

But it also lets you use ALL ROUTE CHANGE & REROUTE(detour) while driving but comes with the warning " Operating the system when driving is dangerous" lol...

so if you can do an ALL ROUTE CHANGE (same destination, different route) when moving what was the point in stopping us from setting a route while driving??. Obviously the GPS can pickup the cars position when moving ok??

If it can recalculate this from your position while driving, they should have left us with the ability to set a route when moving.

there must be some easy way out there to disable this obvious "SAFTEY" inconvenience..........

:D :D

Right, and this constrain (the unability to set destination and other functions while the car is moving) still remains after my Toyota dealership 'repair', but at least I can open, close and tilt the display while driving. Before I had to stop the car and put the shift in P (Park), or at least put it in N (Neutral) for a moment while the car was moving.

Any disk will work in a 51 plate Avensis with the TNS 200 unit. Unless it requires a DVD which is highly unlikely and therfore a diff unit.

Best to look on e-bay for 1 they go for around £50 the dealers charge £100 Plus.

The TNS300 is the DVD one, covers UK and Europe, over 7 gigabytes worth of info on them, (I tried to copy it but couldn’t :ffs: )

download 'dvd decrypter' search for it.

It can crack anything then use DVD Shrink (search for that too) to burn from file to DVD. Easy as Pie

Just thinking 7 GIG! must be a double layer dvd. Shrinking it might not work but its worth a try. or buy one on eBay one is up for £60 - £70 at the mo

My Toyota Sat Nav has sent me some weird routes. Once up a farm track only suitable for tractors. Another time I ended up in a builders yard. I have now resorted to getting an AA route for journeys. I still set the SAT NAV but if it deviates from the AA route I ignore it. I agree it is good in most towns and cities. Yes the updated discs are expensive.

I did borrow my neighbours Tom Tom on occasions but even that is sometimes not reliable.

I agree it is annoying to have to stop and SET DESTINATION.

Turning off the Newbury Oxford road at Oxford onto the Oxford ring road the Toyota Sat Nav I have takes you back and forth between two roundabouts.

Does anybody know of a 100% reliable Sat Nav system? If so please tell me.

I use the Sony T-50, this has maps which needs updating and may occasionally use a slightly longer route in towns/cities, buit this advantage of this unit is that i had traffic updates which i have found to be really useful in avouiding jams.

Though it can't divert you if the accident has jsut happened and until it is reported on raioe stations (this is where it picks up the jams signals)

I dont know if any system is 100% reliable (probably impossible) but I have the Trafficmaster in my other car, and it can be used whilst driving. Not cheap as a retrofit though - I got it done as a dealer fit (not Toyota) and that made it comparative to other good systems.

Normally if you select Fast route it picks more 'safe' main roads, picking 'shortest' sometimes ends up with some rather interesting single track back roads!
