Gripping Story

So I took my car to the garage today to get a knocking sound on full lock looked at on my car,... turns out a CV joint will go within the next 12 months... whatever I have about 1 month to live if my handling doesnt improve!!!! :crybaby:

They checked everything and all they could say was "Dont know how you can drive it like that!" <_< Yeah cheers mate, what about FIX IT! :censor:

I can not go around country lanes more than 50 60 otherwise it feels like its just going to slide off the road, and going over 80 on a motorway gives me quite a bit of shaking in the wheel, and again if the road starts turning I HAVE to slow down!

MY !Removed! 1.6 ESCORT COULD HOLD MOTORWAY CORNERS OVER 100!!!

Car is a 3SGE 2.0 SSII CELICA ST202. Stock springs and shocks.

Tyres tracking and balancing are all fine... I have a feeling the car was used for Track days in Japan,...It came with big ***** rear wheels,.. broken shocks,... and (mud under the arches..)

Anyone know what this could be due to?? I need to be able to drive the thing without $hitting myself on every corner..... Cheers Guys.

I`m goin to be really helpful now and tell you that it doesn`t sound very good.

What tyres are you using? Pressures ok? Have you had the camber angles checked? I`m assuming the suspension was replaced with new components? What about the figure 8`s? Are they worn?

The suspension on Gen 6`s is a little more complex than older models,

Oh, im running dunlops on the front and some big Yokohama gravel looking tyres on the back.......... pressure is 29 all round....

It didnt shake today on the motorway, but all the way to work it felt like I was a kid riding a bike with the handle bars bent,.... very unbalanced,...

Not too clued up on the Gen 6 to be honest. But i do know that they have a marked efect on the handling. Also using different size tyres is not recomended for stability. If your going to put lowering springs on then it`s essential that you get the tracking and camber adjusted accordingly as this will alter the steering geometry.

I think really that your best bet is going to be to completely overhaul the entire suspension. Oh and look at getting a set of decent matched tyres. Lot cheaper in the long run.

Nothings ever easy with cars!!

What we talking about for a suspension overhaul and camber adjustment? Are these things you can get done easily under warrenty?

What exactly did they replace when you bought it?

At the end of the day (I hate that saying) They should have sold you a roadworthy vehicle of merchantable quality. If you can prove that the vehicle is unsafe or unroadworthy.... Which it sounds like it may be , then you can ask them to repair/replace defective items to make it roadworthy.

In the first instance though you should get the vehicle checked out by an impartial reputable, garage. Get a written report on any defects, then go back to who sold it and speak nicely to them (Try to get them on your side) They mignt be very helpful. :)

You lost me with the super strut stuff dude..

Wouldnt even a stupid garage be able to check the camber alignment if this usually points to these kind of issues?

You`d be surprised. I`ve seen a 'specialist' garage try to check camber angles with a set square and a spirit level.... With the wheels OFF the ground. , :ffs:

You might need to sound round and get some recomendations.

If it was used for track days, then it is possible that he previous owner changed the springs. Maybe it's ended up with a mixture of springs or something. I would have thought that most aftermarket springs would also lower the car. Does it sit at a normal looking height? Does it sit level front to rear and side to side (can be difficult to tell, due to anti roll bars)?

Assuming the springs are currently standard all round, you really don't want to change them for a lower/stiffer setup before you get the problem sorted. Stiffer springs will make it even more of a handful.

It is also possible (and I know you don't want to hear this), that your car has been crashed and a bodged repair done, leaving the suspension geometry out.

Is it the front or rear which slides? Is it the same when turning left and right?

Got an AA dude out to have a look, he said its pulling on acceleration and it feels lose but wheels supension etc is fine,.... however he did spot the front left wheel was half inch back than the right... however both sides were 8 1/2 foot from centre of front wheel to centre of back... he said if its had a knock and its been repaired they whoever did it is the dogs goolies,. and it would of fixed it... but no evidence of any prangs or repairs....

He suggested getting the car optoflex 'd to check all alignment, does anyone know how much this costs?

Also I have adjustable rear anti roll bars, could they be off set causing this issue?

Cheers lads.

Pulling to one side on acceleration sounds like torque steer? I don't think the gen 6 usually suffers from it? Do you have the factory fitted strut brace across the front towers installed?

'Optoflex' sounds like a brand name for laser wheel alignment, regarded as more accurate than traditional methods.

Adjustable rear arb could account for a front to rear imbalance, but shouldn't affect left to right balance. In my experience, the rear arb has a relatively small effect on handling anyway.

pulling to 1 side on accelleration could be sticking caliper on that side or a worn wheel bearing same side.

I feel it holds less going right, but its scary both ways,.. I dont mind handling slides on a round about under 30 but if it happens at 80 on a motorway then its a whole nother story..

It just seems like its the front, but only the back has gone out on me.. How can I tell if the springs are different,. without taking them out. Im going to call into an ABS centre like maleborn said,. see if somethings is amiss...

Yeah checked, they are fine. I am getting the 4 wheel alignment done tomorrow, hopefully its the thurst line that needs adjusting or something of the sort...

I am also getting a cv joint replaced.. Its getting done under warrenty and the guy said they are 140 each. He is only replacing one.

Should these be done in pairs?

I also noticed the grip is only a problem when I steer to the right. Steering to the left you can feel the grip on the road... Oddly noticed on a drive back from asda tonight.
