Hi im brand new to the form and looking for some help?

I've a st205 import96 gt with a gt4 lump, prob around 300bhp with front mount intercooler and more boost 1.1bar, through the front wheels, got it from calder motor and been having a few problems, engine is very hot and pinking at around 5000rpm?.

Used to have a paddle clutch but gearbox went and ripped through all the spleens on both plates, cant get new plates anywhere so got a standard clutch installed so can get from a to b!!

have also not been able to find any uprated clutch to handle the power? :help:

You will need a seriously uprated clutch to take that kind of power. Try Fensport. Most other places will only do you a pattern part of the standard clutch, which won't stand a chance with your output.

Calder Motor's web site says they have a 12 month warranty, so I would go back there first. In my opinion they are slightly irresponsible selling such a poorly modified car. If you are firm with them they might even sort out you clutch.

You also have to consider that the rest of the transmission (gearbox, driveshafts, CV joints etc) were designed for just over half the load you are putting on them. Even if you use an uprated clutch, I fear it is only a matter of time before your gearbox complains too. Seriously consider getting an MR2 Turbo gearbox. Thats what others have used when building a FWD 3s-gte celica. Thinking about it, an MR2 turbo clutch might fit your existing gearbox, but I don't know for definite.

If you get all that sorted, you then have the problem of trying to put 300 hp throught the front wheels. Later MR2 Turbos had a limited slip diff, which would definitely be worth having. Even then your gonna have traction problems in 1st, 2nd and probably 3rd gear, and thats in they dry. Even the GT-4 (ST185, 205 BHP?) limited boost in low protect the transmission, and minimise traction problems). I can see 300 hp through the front wheels being a challege to tame.

Your 'pinking' problem sounds really worrying. Usually pinking/knocking occurs at lower engine speeds and high loads, e.g. driving up a hill in 5th gear. At 5000 rpm, it is more likely to be detonation (pre ignition), which is at best a very bad thing. Of course it could be something else, but you ought to get someone to look at it just in case.

My recommendation would be to back the boost off. I don't know what is standard boost for your engine (I suspect its a ST205 lump rather than ST185 if it really has 300 bhp). Anyway, 300 hp is more than you can practically put through the front wheels, and yours transmission can't handle it either. It would make much more sense to back the boost off so you are making more like 240 to 260 HP IMO.

Goodluck, and let us know how you get on with it.

Ye a bit worried about the pinking, fuel pump was shot and i thought replacing it would have been the problem fixed, even got a apexi air fuel comp to sort out the fuel. Tried turning down the boost to 0.6 bar from 1.1bar but didnt seem to make a diference. going to have to take it back to the garrage again :ffs:
