Shift Lock Button On Auto

Next question about my new Avensis (why doesn't the manual have this stuff in?).

What does the 'Shift Lock' button do on the automatic (near the auto shifter)?

It allows you to get the shifter out of 'Park' if it gets locked in there by accident. I have a TX-3 1.8 auto, and I was a little baffled by the Shift Lock button too. :-)

I think there's a reference to it in the manual someplace.

Your next question will be: 'Why isn't there a light on the button that makes the mirrors retract so you can find it in the dark?" :-)

The question after that will be, " How do I dim the dash display for night time use"

Nice cars though..

Cheers. Can't see why it would get locked in there, but never mind!

Ah, I know how to alter the dash brightness! Had a T-Spirit Corolla last time with optitron so I can sort that!

But the mirror retract button being lit up would be good. Might have to wear a miners hat when I'm driving so I can light up the button!!

It's very useful when all you want to do is take the handbrake off and roll the car forward without starting the engine!

The brightness is set by the same button that is used to change the odometer display between trip meters. Just hold it in and there's a bar graph at the bottom of the display that shows the brightness setting.

If someone is interested in how the "shift-lock override button" works here there is an official Toyota USA tech paper explaining it all: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h18.pdf.

If someone is in general interested in automatic transmissions here there is a really well done tech description of the japanese Aisin-Warner 6 speed automatic transmission for the Volkswagen Touareg (the same of the Porsche Cayenne S, Turbo and Turbo S, the Volkswagen New Beetle and the Audi TT):
