Gassing For Air Con Unit

Hello everyone,

I spoke to Mr. T about having my dirty pollen filter replaced and he suggested something called "gassing the air conditioning unit". This means replacing any gas or fluid in the air con system (which is about 4 years old in my Celica) which may have run out so that the air con becomes good as new. Has anyone out there had this kind of thing done? Has it made a difference? My air con seems ok, just a slight smell of chemical when you first turn it on. What do you all reckon ?

Thanks and regards,

Loanranger.

i believe if it aint broke dont fix it , but its up to the individual , if you love the celica and can afford it go for it , apparantly you can get some kind of air freshener from Halfords for air con smells :)

If it still chills the air enough, there is no reason to get it re-gassed. They sometimes have a very slight leak so after a long time they can loose all the gas. I mean, how often do you hear of people getting their domestic fridges re-gassed?

The smell is caused by fungus growing in the damp conditions inside the evaporator. Make sure to use it often (even through winter) to prevent this. When you are using the air con it can help if you turn it off a few minutes before the end of your journey. This helps prevent the damp conditions that promote fungus growth. You can also get aerosols to help clean up the fungus.

I have no more air con. It took a hike from the 185 as it wasnt working and to be honest I never used it so dont miss it. One less pump to drive and a few kilos outta the body cant do any harm for the pickup on the old beast. I usually just drop the window, I know its not cold but hey its a good feeling flying along with your arm being hit by all manner of little bugs.

Hi Steve, I only found out about the pollen filter after I had my 40k service done. I was given a report showing all the checks Mr. T had done and one of them was for the pollen filter which they said was dirty. I don't know where it is but it only costs about £10 or so to replace. I remember seeing another forum post from someone who gave insturctions on where the filter is and how to change it. :-)
