Fuel Tank Capacity

Been meaning to ask this for some time now, so here goes.

I have a 92 Corolla GLi Exec with a reported fuel tank size of 50 litres as stated in the owners manual. However, I have only ever managed to put between 35 and 38 litres in the tank, even when driving with the fuel gauge light on.

Is my gauge knackered or is the tank size likely to be different from that in the manual?

Any help is appreciated.

I would guess that the tank is 50lts when bone dry, when the light comes on you may have 2 gallons left in the tank which equtes to around 10ltres,

Ive still managed to shove in just over 50ltrs in my car the other day, even driving around with the light on, so it could be a sticky needle, dunno
