Battery Drains Quickly

Hi,

We've suffered a few times now where the Battery drains very quickly when the ignition is turned on (all dashboard lights on) but the engine is off.

This is with NO headlights on - once was with the CD playing but that should take minimal power.

I've had the Battery checked and it showed NO problems at all.

I can only assume that something is drawing a huge current. I've never had a similar problem on other cars before.

Has anyone else suffered the same problem or any ideas what might be happening?

thanks, John

The manual says you shouldn't leave the 'ignition' on for anything other than powering something, like windows down, or of course, starting the car. It saya any lengthy use of the ignition will cause Battery drain and possible damage!

I thought that by turning the key once you could have power to the radio only, then the next turn being ignition, then next turn to start the engine.

Is your Verso a petrol or diesel? Diesel would mean the glow plugs were constantly warmed up (I think!)

I understand that modern cars with electronic engine computers and so on draw a lot of power when the ignition is left on without the engine running. The computer will be running, measuring a dozen or more sensors. Turning the key to ACC should help.

Thanks for the considered feedback.

Sure the EMC, diesel coil (yes its the 2L diesel model) and other stuff will consume power but I'm still suspicious that its not that simple - I can't believe they could drain a Battery sufficient to stop the engine starting in a matter of minutes.

You've resisted flaming me for doing it in the first place, but I should add that the canterbury Toyota garage did it on my car as well when they were valeting it after a service! (and they weren't exactly apologetic so I shall be looking elsewhere for my next service - any suggestions for east kent UK?)

How easy would it be to track down whatever is drawing so much current?
