Cold Air Feed

hi

i've got the Apexi Induction kit at the moment, and one of my friend that drives a fiesta with an induction kit said to me that after he put a cold air feed from his bumper to his induction kit, he can really feel the difference. so i'm thinking of fitting one to my yaris.. but then i was thinking are there gonna be any disadvantages when you fit a cold air feed? eg. more dirt, fuel consumption etc..

Has anyone fitted a cold air feed to their car? Also is it hard to install? since the induction kit is at the back of the engine bay?

Thx very much for ur help

Ray

Im not 100% sure if this will apply to the Yaris, but a cold air feed will definatley improve performance. The idea of an induction kit is to suck cold air into the engine, thus improving performance. With the Apexi, from what people say, it takes in too much warm air (mind you, any 'open' filter will) but with a cold air feed the system will be improved and as far as i know, the only downside is cost of the feed.

The best set up if you had money would be a closed air induction kit with a cold air feed. That will suck in cold air, whack it in the engine and give you improved performance.

The best CAI (cold air intakes) are conical filters, in protective casing, positioned by the wheel arch.

So they are away from any engine heat and as close to the source of cold air as possible.

The only extra performance a badly designed/fitted induction kit will give you is in your head.

Thx for the suggestions!!

the cost of the air feed isnt expensive at all.. 60mm diameter only cost £4.30 from Halfords. Now my only concern would be that if it'll take in a lot of dirt and rubbish into the engine bay since the tube is in the front bumper grill.

Those closed induction kit were quite expensive arent they? and are there any designed for the yaris? i saw the pipercross Viper induction kit ( i think) for a Ford Focus.. they cost £185

and also if i've got the apexi one already, i probably wont go and get another different one cos that would cost me more money..

Thx guys

yea they're very expensive for what they are, you could easily spend £300 on one

just bung the tubing in there and it'll probably make a difference, good luck with it

If your worried about crap getting in there... don't be! It's not like it's a vacuum cleaner! But if you are, just weld or solder some really fine chicken-wire mesh over the front and give it a clean once a week when you wash your car!

There'll be no extra dirt. There's still the same amount of dirt getting through the grill whether the tube is there or not.....

Is that a ready to fit cold pipe for the Yaris cus I'd deffiently get one if I had one - which I plan to.

You should hear an increased wine with colder air. I can noticed the difference just between summer and winter. Not sure you'd notice too much difference in this cold weather - but would make a good difference is spring and summer.

I like the idea of a cold feed pipe . Is it easy to do ?

I looked at the forum page which has a guide to modding an existing air filter system . He drill out the box before fixing the pipe . I also saw a post by Gerard ( aussie guy ) where he took off the original pipe and put a wider , shorter one on

Has any one done this kind of mod and how good is it ( what do you notice in the performance ) ?

cold air feed is good as it describes its own purpose in its name

but you wont get any power gains.

ok so you may feel a slight loss on hot days and youve got a heatsoaked engine and the filter is dragging in hot air (not good)

but dont be expecting 10bhp

umm... i'll probably have a go then... and see if accrleation would be quicker..

sOcks: it's not designed to fit the yaris.. it's only a heat resistant tube from Halfords

Also as jaxx said if u've got a heatsoaked engine and the filter is dragging in hot air.. how bad is it in the long term?

thx

  • 3 years later...

ive bought the Cold induction kit from KnN...and yea it gives slight power to your car only if the air that enters the engine is cold...you can feel the difference when you are driving in a cool windy afternoon compared when you are driving in a hot days on stock...if you want more power from it, then buy a turbo kit (like i do but i want to sell my engine soon if my 4efte project is possible), you can even beat a tiburon in a 0-60 run with the kit and the CAI, i can issure you with this..ok back to your question, yea your engine bay will be easily be covered with dirt..the only way to eliminate this is to make a box (using a plexiglass) by covering the important part of the car (for my car, it looks like the original box but the mechanic has made minor changes like covering half of the front grille). one more thing, you also have to make hole to your hood or buy an aftermarket one, this is because you have covered some of the air that needs to cool the extractor in the engine, in addition, this smoothen the flow of the air inside the engine...this is what i did and what ive been told...i hope this info will help ;)
