Engine Noise/squeak

Hey there.

Does anyone know what could be causing my engine to squeak? The squeak/whistle sound usually only lasts for approximately first 20-30 mins of journey and can mainly be heard while sitting at traffic lights, or travelling in rush hour congestion.

The sqeak/whistle sounds rhythmic and similar to one of those old fashioned kettles (which whistle when the water inside has boiled).

Could it be the water pump? I've placed some "lubrication fluid" (as sold by halfords) into the water pump and the noise has changed slighty (thou, it might be my imagination).

I have a generation 7 celica.

Any advice/tips would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

John

Just a guess but the drive belts can make a noise when they are cold. I doubt its your coolant as it would get worse as it heats up not disappear. Other than that it may be a bearing on a pulley but thats about all I can think of at the moment. I hate hunting down stuff like that!!

Good luck.

I agree with the above. Likely to be one of these. Try retensioning the belt or replacing it altogether. While your doing that you can check the bearings and pulleys for play.

Sounds like the belt tensioner pulley. It's quite a common fault on the gen 7. If your car is quite low mileage, and not too far out of warranty, you might be able to convince your dealer to do it for no charge/reduced rate.

Thanks for the tips!

How do you get into the "belt tensioner pulley", to check it out?

I'm not very mechanically minded (but a few mates are).. so, together, we've been trying to work it out. Thou', the celica engine seems to be encased in plastic?

Does anyone know how to (easily) get into the engine?

Does anywhere sell a workshop manual for the generation 7 Celica?

Thanks in advance

John

It's the pulley for the auxiliary drive belt (the one that drives the alternator). I think you can see the alternator on the front right hand side of the engine.
