Alarm/key Question

Hi guys and gals,

I've recently bought a Yaris SR and have a question about alarms - my car is on a V plate and has central locking but didn't come with an alarm key. I'm a bit confused whether the SR came with an alarm as standard or not?

You usually get a code on a piece of metal with the keys. Your meant to store it in a safe place because you need it incase you need a new keyfob. So its likely you may need a new alarm unit as well :o

At the moment I just lock it manually using the doorlock (central locks).

I've got a spare set of keys with the little metal tag, but both keys are normal versions (no extra buttons to arm/disarm the alarm). So either it doesn't have an alarm, or that one of the previous owners lost the alarm transponder key.

I've seen blank transponder keys for sale, IF its a case of a missing key could i buy a blank replacement and program it myself? I've got the metal code tag, so the dealer should be able to do it, but I'm guessing they'll charge the earth for the privilege.

Might be an idea to check the SR actually does have an alarm. Because they ode may only be for the immobilizer. I personally thought it was only the T-Sport which came with an alarm.

Is there an LED down next to the handbrake (this would be the alarm LED)? The LED on the dash is the immobilizer LED.

No LED near the handbrake - which goes along with the lack of an alarm key to suggest its not got an alarm then :cacker:

Oh well, something I'll have to sort out then!. Thanks for the help guys, apologies for being a bit useless - I've completely new to these and haven't done much research yet.

The SR doesn't have an alarm or remote central locking as standard, but 90% of them are fitted with it by the dealer as a matter of default. (so my garage told me) You may have got unlucky! There might be an LED next to electric mirror switches, i have one there, and near the heater, dunno if thats it.

Iv got '02 reg car though, so earlier ones might not have it... im not sure though!

You have a V plate Yaris (1999?) which is one of the earlier ones, you do have central locking but I’m not sure if remote central locking was available that early on the Yaris. If you had remote central locking you would also have the dead locks as well.

I believe the alarm is standard on the T-Sport (did that come out in 2001?), not sure if the alarm was standard on other models or was a dealer option at the time of purchase.

Either way you have a great car which is pretty secure as long as you lock it!

Thanks guys, I thought I might've been fairly lucky and found that I just needed a replacement alarm key. Nevermind, like you say it looks pretty secure and I'm sure they're not really a target for thieves - just piece of mind really having an alarm.

I'm loving the car so far, its weird being back in a hatchback and its feels a lot different from the Fiesta Zetec S i used to have. I'm pleased with the performance - not going to set the road alight, but definitely nippy enough for me. I notice that mine has the TTE exhaust which is rather nice for a "freebie" :)

All pre-2002 SR's have a TTE exhaust as standard. My car just missed out..... :ffs:
