Recommended Engine Oil / Brake Fluid

Newby here.

About to change the oil on a recently acuired '89 Corolla 4WD estate. It has a 1.6 Efi engine. Can anyone recommend a suitable oil? Is 15W/40 the right grade, and how much am I likely to need? It's relatively high mileage, but in mint condition, and I'd like it to stay that way.... By the way, it gets pretty cold where I live (as low as -20). I don't know if this is a factor that needs to be considered.

Also due for a change is the brake fluid, as the pedal's getting spongy and the hydraulic fluid's lost that 'ready-brek glow'. Is DOT 4 okay? It hasn't got ABS.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. If anybody knows where I could get hold of a user manual for this car, I'd be very grateful.

Hello and greatings to Hungray

A '89 Corolla 4WD estate ... Last time I was in Hungray it was a Trabant 601 and a Barkas Van.

Yes, 15W/40 oil will be fine (preferably a 'Semi-synthetic') but if you are concerned about cold conditions (-20) then consider 10W/40 grade.

DOT 4 is the ideal brake fluid but if you do decide to bleed your braking system beware that a least one brake bleed nipple could snap due to being rusted up due to age of vehicle!
