Avensis Tops Poll

Take a look at this:

Avensis tops quality poll

Good news eh?

It doesn't say best quality, it says most reliable, the Avensis certainly isn't the best quality car out there, but possibly is the most reliable for the time being.

It's also a bit misleading as it's only based on breakdowns, usually on number of callouts which again is only a small proportion of an overall reliability picture, afterall the Ford Focus won this once and your not telling me that a Ford Focus is more reliable than anything else on the road when all aspects of failure are taken into account.

..., The German TUV are telling you:

"In January, the Ford Focus was declared the German car-industry leader in reliability for cars between one and three years old in the Auto Report 2002, published annually by the German TÜV. Founded in the 1870's, Germany's Technical Inspection Association (TÜV), an authoritative industry body, controls and approves quality standards across a wide range of products and industries including: passenger lifts, diesel engines, sprinkler systems, hydroelectric power plants, plus the automotive and nuclear industries. Over 3,000 people alone are employed in TÜV's Automotive division, testing the roadworthiness of 4 million vehicles a year in Europe and world-wide.

"Congratulations to Ford, congratulations to the Focus," declared Rainer Strang, chief editor, TÜV Auto-Report 2002, at the press conference announcing the vehicle's victory. "At its TÜV premiere the car turned out to be a shooting star. Its number of serious failings was only one percent, which is also a new record".

The Ford Focus is the first German-built car to secure this coveted No. 1 position since 1987. The exhaustive analyses carried out by the TÜV compared a total of 107 different models from all automakers represented in the German market. The TÜV conducted product tests on and provided conformity assessment certificates for a wide range of factors, including: automotive parts, components, systems, whole vehicles and type testing. Remarkably nearly 93% of all Focus cars examined had no fault."

Congratulations to Toyota on their award.

OK, wrong word with Quality. Sorry. Won't happen again.

Although the picture on the news item is of the new Avensis, I wonder if the survey actually was the new or previous model? Doesn't say.

Hah true must be about old model as not all cars stay on fleets for 12 - 18mths!

This must be about the new model Avensis since it was introduced in 2003, and this is an annual award which presumably looked at models driven in fleets in 2004. Was the old model Avensis particularly big in leasing fleets anyway?

In addition to the likes of Leaseplan and PHP, leasing fleets could also mean hire car companies who often lease cars for only 6 months.

What's missing from the article summary is how many of each model was the sample. If they had 100 Ford Focus and 20 were "unreliable", and they had 5 Avensis and 1 was "unreliable", then in terms of comparative "unreliability" they are both the same. I hope these statistical things were taken into account.

As a new model Avensis owner, I hope the article holds true for my car.

As regards sampling, no question that will be taken in to account.

However what is more important I find is the customer satisfaction surveys, because breakdowns do not tell the whole story. Living with the car and sometimes it's annoying niggles is more revealing. That's why auto express and J D Power surveys really hold water and that is why lexus always come top!

However if it is breakdown stats you're after the fleets usually know a thing or two!!
