Has anyone ever managed to 'fill' the Battery while driving ? I only ask because when you look at the picture of the Battery there seems to be space for one more bar at the top than I can ever get. Before anyone asks, yes I do get it into the 'green' zone regularly. I imagine you'd need a pretty big hill to drive down to achieve this last bar.

Yep...done it on the hill down into Cromford, Derbyshire. Had it in B mode going down the steep hill.

Was that a one-off? I did a long trip on the motorway yesteday and never got up to full, the most i saw was one bar below?

I had a one off where it was fully full and a one off where it had one bar left. The computer in the car will always try to use up the Battery if nearly full or recharges it if nearly empty otherwise you will get a knackered Battery.
