When its been running some time it gets hot and takes ages to cool down. the viscouse fan only engages when the header tank is about to boil. any idea's???.

As soon as the temperatur indicator goes above normal, the fan has to come up to full rpm to prevent overheating. Exchange the viscous clutch or block it (price quoted: 150€ VAT)!

dodgy thermostat?

I agree here if the coolant is definitely up to the correct levels and has no air pockets or bubbles, then I suggest finding a way to lock out the fan clutch, as it is getting on a bit maybe rip it off and replace it with an electric one, go to a breakers and pick up something late, and smallish. The thermostat might be sticky too.

I suggest it is sorted quick, there is not much will kill a modern engine as quick as overheating.
