Musical Gearbox

Well tra la la. Heard it for the 1st time this morning when i was changing a cd. An ominous whine from the gearbox in 2nd gear :crybaby: . Definately wasn`t there last week. :(

Trouble is , by the time i got to work i was imagining 3rd,4th and 5th had joined in. (That`ll be paranoia then)

Now. I do like to nip these things in the bud, but the timing is lousy. Xmas an all. So i`m faced with a few options.

1/ Get the box rebuilt..... £500 ish

2/ Change the oil, Throw some molyslip in and hope for the best...... £25 ish :)

3/ Get an ST205 box (2nd hand) .... £500 ish

1&3 are goiing to mean hammering Mr Visa

No 2 is like doing ostrich, which i quite like the sound of at the mo.

Any ideas... Suggestions. How long will the box last as it is? :help:

Have you ever used the molyslip before? The missus has got a seat ibiza which makes a lot of noises from the gearbox, but has no problems otherwise (has been like this for the last 10,000 miles whilst I've been wondering what to do!)

Sorry to not be of any help though

Incase you need it for option 2/:

gen5gt4gearbox.gif

Oil type: SAE 90W

Oil Qty: 5,2 litres

On another subject completley - Your garage link doesn't work - it just says I should be logged in as Daktari to view this page! - I think the link should be:

Thanks. I`ve updated the link . Never had a need for molyslip before, so i`m just going on heresay really. But the way i look at it is that it cant do it any more harm by using it. I`ll be doing that tomorrow.

molyslip it for now then do the right thing st205 box, you know it makes sence.

save the pennies mr.visa is bad news.

The ST205 box can handel over 600Bhp reliably, so unless its not been looked after i dunno why its gone.

True. But mines the original 185 box with 120K+ miles on it. Not too sure of its pedigree although it`s got a full MrT service history. But even so its had to put up with some miles so it`s no great surprise. Like you say i`ll change the oil and put some molyslip in. Incidentally i noticed i got a weeping oil seal. May as well do that at the same time.

well suppose if its loosing oill........

you'll probably want to get a definate price for a rebuild for the box (normally a lot more than that, specially if you need new shafts, gears, synchros etc, it gets expensive)

personally depending on price id look for a Carlos Seinz (RC if import) or ST205 box, but you may neeed a matching rear diff (im not 100% certain) as i belive they have different ratios.

Yeah. I`m going to put up with it making funny noises for the time being, But the whole issue of ratios needs looking at. The ratios are crap for driving around towns. Only really good for motorway use. 3rd gear is a very tall gear. Goes all the way to 100+ Also i`m getting a lot of vibration when applying power if the revs are below 2K. Hoping decat may help here. Any advice welcome. Really the whole thing wants sorting out, but where to start? Sorry. Rambling a bit.

Daktari, id personally give Ian Smith (Toyauto centre in Nottingham) a call, he knows everything there is to know about GT-Fours and is the only guy in the UK that specialises exclusivly on them.

http://www.toyautocentre.co.uk

and the phone no's on there, (phones the best way to get in touch as opposed to e-mail etc)

If anyone can help he will be able (though is quite busy with jobs at the minute, he will still be ok to talk)

Hope this helps a little

Andy.

have you considered, a second hand gear box, from which you can swap the internals, it works out a lot cheaper, you can pick up gearboxes that have holes in the casing, or other external damage that wreckers sell cheap but the internals can still be in very good shape. I just picked one up a st205 box for AU$200 (about 80 pound) with a hole in the casing and the interanls are near perfect. All you have to do is swap them over and Mr Visa survives another day.

No i hadn`t :) But it`s another option. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I`ve actually considered buying an accident damaged 205 and do an engine/gearbox swap as well. But whatever i end up doing will have to wait till spring. Cos it`s too cold
