Hi

I have a corolls Gt AE82, when driving the suspension seems to fell loose and clonking a bit when turning, is this a common problem on AE82's, is it bushes struts

shocks.

Can anyone help me out

Also changing gear from 4th to 3rd is a little roug, could this be clutch adjustment (clutch needs to be depressed nearly to the floor to change gear) or gearbox oil related or is the gearbox in need of renewal, again anyon familar with this problem

arn't you meant to press the clutch to the floor to change gear ???- check if its hydraulic or cable - could need topping up. clonking sounds like it could be a ball joint.

Can't think whats wrong with your gearbox but ... I do think I know whats up with your Front suspension:

Your front antiroll bar has two 'tiebar' type bushes that conect it to the front wishbones on either side (its a thin bar with two small 'ball joints' at either end, I suppose a sort of 'bone' shape).

These bushes are the same design (but slightly diferent in length) on the AE82 and AE92, plus The MK1 MR2 ...it is the Mk1 mr2 that suffers worst; so much so that 'Practical Classics' did an article on replacing them!

The 'tiebar thingy' in theory should be simple to change but in reality due to age things go wrong!

They are held by a 13mm Nut (I think it's 13mm!), but when you turn the nut the bush/ball joint turns. To try to counteract this Toyota did have the decency to put a 6mm 'allen key' head in the bolt end for you to stop the bush turning with a 6mm allen key while you try to undo the nut, however due to years of filth and corrosion the 'allen key' hole has usually corroded and just 'rounds' out!

The 'tiebars' are quite expensive from Toyota (£100 a pair) for such a small item however they are available pattern part for about £27.

Good luck

On my AE82, i have got a knocking from what sounds like suspension when cornering hard, but i have traced it down to play in the steering rack! jack the front of your car up and check for play side to side on the wheel! You might very well have play in other suspension bushes like 'Twincam GTI' has mentioned, but that problem sounds similar to mine!

If you only have trouble with changing gear with 3rd/4th it wont be the clutch, because that should happen in every gear if the clutch was at fault! I imagine the syncromesh is on its way out just as 'JT' mentioned!

Just thought i would mention that every Toyota ever made has had a Hydraulic Clutch! They have never used cable, not even on the first Landcruisers/Hilux/Corona/crown etc, which you would imagine they would!

JT: Nice avatar matey! :):thumbsup:
