Stalling '88 Celica

I've got a 1988 Celica 2 door, automaitc. When I put it in drive, it tries to die in first gear. If I give it a lot of gas, it will start bucking, then finally swith to second gear and it's good to go. As soon as I come to a stop and it shifts back into first, the problem starts all over again. It reverses fine, idles fine, and is pretty much in great shape other than the stalling. Any solutions, suggestions, or input?

on stopping put it in neutral or park . check your fluid level , could be the power band for first gear is full of crap and the fluid aint getting through , but its a who's who with this kind of problem. try pulling away in the 1 , 2 , and 3 stages instead of drive see if they are all affected in the same way.

It only has 1 and 2, and in first, it stalls and bucks. I haven't tried second, but I will today. How do you clean the power band? If you on anyone can tell me or help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. I was told it could be that, or one of many other things: Vaccuum line, fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, torque converter, converter switch... :ffs:

I have a manual ST162 '89 and have the same problem where the car will stall in first gear until it has been running for a considerable amount of time, ie. 45 mins warm up time.

Any solutions yet?
