I'm thinking of buy one for my brother to learn in and hopefully keep for a very long time!.

So corolla owners tell me about them please :D

The spec is a r reg (98-99) Corolla GS 1.3

1. What are they like to learn in? are they hard to park that sort of thing?

2. what would be good mileage (on the clock) for one?

3. how bullet proof are these car knowing toyota probably 'kevlar standard'?

4. what the performace like?

Thanks guys

Tim

I have a Corolla GS (But it's a 1.6) amongst my vehicles and I have to say it is very reliable and easy to drive. Although I must say it is a little 'tinny' compared to my older Toyota (i.e. metal not so thick!). Still build quality seems fine.

I also find the GS slightly harder to park (when reversing) than my older Corolla GTi due to the rear window being (or appearing to be) higher up.

I presume it must be very cheap if its for a learner driver?

Thanks for the info  the car is going for just over 4k and looks really neat!

Is there anything i should look out for common problems? also where do they start to rust first?

Thank you very much for your help so far

Rust as yet does not seem to be a problem and mine is 'full of waxoil' inside sills and box sections etc. However I do think in the future in general the AE111 Corollas (1997-2002) are going to be real 'rust buckets' quite simply due to the fact that the metal is so thin. :o It will be a shame 'cause the cars as per usual with Toyota are still well put together, smooth gear changing, rattle free and quiet inside etc.

A point I have remembered is that a certain batch of the year you are looking at did have problems with the factory fit alarms (if it has one) 'blipping' to themselves whilst driving along! not actually blasting their noise but more of a squeak. Toyota did acknowledge the problem and replaced all defective alarm sirens at no cost to owners. How did I know this ...because I was one of this batch of owners

For that sort of price, I'd look for a newer post face lift (twin headlights)
