My 87 gti has begun to judder violently when braking at over 50mph, new brake pads i thought, but now its doing it when i make even the slightest left turn of the steering wheel. Not just taking corners etc but even a very slight left swing in the road!! I've tried putting my fingers in my ears and humming but this doesnt help!! :D Any ideas folks? Storm

just had the wheel bearings changed at a toyota dealer...would have thought they'd notice warped discs..then again they still drag their knuckles on the floor and eat bananas so maybe i'm mistaken..

I had the same thing with an escort, turned out to be a sticky caliper, which warped the discs (I'd tried putting new discs and pads on)

It looked kinda cool at night though because you could see the discs glow orange through the alloys!

It was actually the pipe that lead to the caliper on the Escort. It finishes with a flexi pipe which had degraded inside. When you pushed the brake pedal there was enough force to push the rubber bits down, but the only way the calipers move back is because of friction with the discs, but this wasn't happening because they didn't have enough pressure to push the rubber back!

Hope this helps as I cost me a bit to fix - 2 sets of pads and 2 sets of discs! - oh and a recon caliper because the seals melted in the original one - and finally a set of goodridge flexible brake lines

You say you get judder under braking ?, can you feel the judder through the brake pedal ONLY or throught the brake pedal and the steering wheel at the same time ?.

As a general rule, judder through the brake pedal ONLY is distorted rear discs or hubs, judder through the steering wheel and pedal is front disc distorted ;)

thanks bob, i get this judder even when im not braking, just when turning the steering wheel slightly to the left, points towards a warped disc i think...

Have the wheel bearings been tightened correctly?I'd jack up the front end(put safe supports underneath) and check for any excess play in both front hubs.

you cant tighten front wheel bearings can you?? arn't they are pressed in using a 2 tonne press. even the backs dont have hubs , so nothing to tighten there either

are your wheel nuts tight ??

  • 3 weeks later...

i had problems with juddering but not when braking, this was intermittent and turned out to be the rear hanbrake system which has a separate drum and brake shoe system, one of the shoes had come undone inside the drum and caused this problem, cheers
