If it is the same as the jap spec then you need to carefully prize off the facia from around the stereo with a screwdriver or similar. It should come out fairly easy just be carefull not to mark the surround. Once you have the facia off all will become obvious.

If it is the double din like the jap spec then you will see a frame that holds the unit in place and there are four screws holding the whole thing in place. You will need a long screwdriver to get to them.

Once you have it all out it can be a little bit fiddly installing the new unit as you will have to screw the frame in to the sides of the cd player.

I managed alright and fitted a single din cd holder from halford underneath the cd player to fill the gap.

Also it is fairly straight forward to connect up. Any car audio shop should be able to supply you with an adaptor. For example if you have a sony unit then you just need to get a sony to toyota adaptor which would plug straight in to the back of your head unit and straight into the toyota harness.

Hope that helps, if it is not the same as the jap spec then i am sure someone will be along to correct me.

i have got the stereo surround off, but can't see anything.

i think the u.k spec is different as i do not have a gap to fill underneath. ( mine must be a single din then?)

i think i need to take some of the dash and vent surrounds off to get to mine.

but just can't see how.

Better Still...

Try http://www.carstereohelp.com it's an american site that only charges for the latest model info... the older Previa is in their freebie list and can be downloaded from http://www.carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalToyPreviaa.htm

After you've sussed out removing the cup-holders and the ashtray.. It's the two screws under the double DIN unit that are the real swines...!

Sorry this was too late to save your £3.00...

I have a 1997 Previa and am also trying to remove the radio. I have an American Haynes manual and I can see how to do it but am stuck!! I do not seem to have a cup holder but rather just a blank fascia in its place. I cannot remove this - it feels like it should slide out but will not - so I can get no further :ffs: . Any ideas please?

I'm dealing with the same problem and don't understand how to unscrew those two gold coloured screws. The srews are fitted from behind and there isn't place for a screwdriver to release them. Any ideas how to fix this problem ?

The blank fascia (statt cupholder) really does just slide (almost pop) out with a bit of force applied. (Careful not to damage your finishing if you feel you need to use a tool to help leverage enough force). Once the cupholder/ashtray/12V power assemblies are out then you can finally access these famous two screws which hold the lower part of this wrap-around fascia in place (just behind & above the screws for the cupholder/fascia).

[Note that the channels for the air vents on the sides come with this fascia/radio combo, and that they have foam around the outside that, with the older models can easily break/tear off!]

Thanks for posting that information, but I think that it may just be a little bit late for Mike Senior as his original post was made in June 2005  ...................At least you have used the "Search" option

This is a subject which seems to come up time and time again! Back in March 2006 I wanted to do exactly the same thing, searched this forum and found various different versions of how to do it, based on manuals covering UK, US & Japanese variants. I eventually discovered the secret and wrote it up on this forum*, together with an extension as to how to remove the dashboard to get at the dash indicator lights, specifically the gear indicator ones which were all blown on my Previa at the time.

Perhaps one of the moderators should collect together all the references to removing Previa radios into one thread or post and make it sticky.

In general - use the search facility to see if your question has been asked and answered before! It usually has, and if nothing else it'll save you time waiting for replies to come in.

JackD

* Search for 'JackD' as the poster and 'radio' in the body of the post, and you'll find that thread has loads of different techniques for removing radios in virtually all the Previa/Estima/Lucida UK/US variants.

Don't see why one should pay. Try this site http://tarago.blogspot.com/ for a good guide and its FREE :)
