Yts Drivebelts

Heard a funny noise from under the bonnet this morning, so thought i'd take a look. The power steering drive belt (or as least I assume it's for the power steering) has got a split running several inches down the belt, and the belt had 'jumped' accross one set of grooves so it wasn't seated correctly on the power steering pump wheel.

The other belt (which snakes round the alternator, water pump etc..) looks fine, but I thought I might as well replace both belts at once. Gotta wait till thursday for the parts, so I hope it holds out until then!

My dealer said they weren't booking any cars in until 13th Jan, and I don't really wanna wait that long, so thought I might have a crack at it myself. I've changed a drivebelt before on other cars I've owned, although admittedly that was with the help of the relevant Haynes manual (which regrettably doesn't exist for the Yaris.)

Has anyone changed a drivebelt on a YTS? Is it an easy job - anything to look out for? Any advice much appreciated :)

For the power steering belt: loosen the bolts on the bracket with the "sliding hole" that attaches the vane pump to the engine and the bolt holding the pump directly to the engine so you can move the pump forward. You may have to turn the pulley a bit so you can reach the bottom bolt on the bracket through it with a socket and extension. Place the new belt and use a crowbar or similar to push the pump back so that you can push in the belt 8-10 mm when pushing with a force of 98 N. Torque the bolts to 44 Nm.

For the alternator, water pump, ... belt: loosen the bolt holding the alternator bracket on the engine and the one on the bracket for the alternator to move the alternator back. Place the new belt and use a crowbar between the engine support and alternator to pull the alternator forward. Belt tension is 7-8.5 mm when pushing with a force of 98N, measured on the belt side going from cranckshaft to alternator. Bolt torque on the engine side of the bracket is 18 Nm, the one holding the alternator is 54 Nm.

Belt tension is for brand new belts.

You can download the Yaris Verso repair manuals >>here<< courtesy of norm, earpl, Robie and some other guy whose name I forgot ;) .

Yves, thanks very much - I'll have a good idea of what I'm doing now

Hope the old belt lasts till the parts turn up next week...
