Been reading the posts for a while now - only just registered!!

I have a Rav4 XT3 - d 4 d - had it since new in September.

Same problem here with the alarm - Xmas morning went to go out and could not open door with keyfob. Opened door with key and as expected the alarm went off.

Tried lots of times without any luck. Went out in the wife's car instead. Got back later and it was fine. Happened again since - new years day and yesterday. Obviously does not like bank holidays!!

Booked it in with toyota for Thursday - I will let you know what they say.

You can check if the problem is the key by using the second remote control key to see if that one is working. Sorry if this is kind of obvious.

I was outside my house each time I had the problem so I did try both sets of keys.

Went to toyota garage yesterday and they could not find anything wrong.

Had this a few times on the Lex - very sensitive to phone masts etc - were you near anything that may have been sending a conflicting signal.

Read somewhere that wrapping the key in tin foil and standing near car receiver (rear window on mine) creates a temporary fix (never tried it with foil so don't shoot me ...).

Same thing here. :censor:

Locked the car last night, went to it this morning

and it won't open, the fob is lighting up but not working

Got the spare it works fine so I swapped the batteries and the fob still doesn't work.

Oh well another trip to the dealer

Hi I'm a new member and am having the same problem with an XT4 D4D.

It has happened twice: Locked with alarm fob and 1 hour later would not unlock. Had to open with keys and as soon as the door opened the alrm went off. Strange thing is you could start the engine and drive around (With the alarm going and the lights flashing) so the immobilisor must have been unset by the fob or key. After 2 hours tried again RAC man turned up and guess what it worked!!!)

2nd time six months later exactly the same thing happened accept we could not get the Doors unlocked for 8 hours. Before I go to Toyota did anyone sort the problem out?

My car went in twice to the garage - but they could not find anything.

But........ the next bit is a bit weird and strange but could be the reason....

Firstly - I only ever had the problem outside my house.

It started to happen more and more - but as I said only outside my house. If I was away somewhere it was ok.

I then realised if I held the key almost flat against the drivers door it worked fine.

ok - now the weird bit....

My wife's car also started to have a few similar problems - and then one day my neighbour has complaining about the alarm on his new car not working properly!! - (a Ford and a Vauxhall)

After weeks of trying to work out what it was I finally thought that it could be linked in some way to the wireless network that I have in my home. Every person I asked said that this is rubbish - but, when I turned off the wireless network the alarm worked fine - when I turned it back on I had problems.

I changed out the wireless router and have not had a problem since.

I told the Toyota garage about this and they also said it was "complete rubbish" and could not possibly be the reason - all I know is that mine appears to be ok now

I since found out that my neighbour played hell with the garage that he got his car from and they changed the alarm - hope he does not read this.

Hope you find the reason for your problem

I also had the same problem with a Sparkrite Alarm I fitted to my old VW Golf in the late 1990s. It was only when I was at the carpark where I worked and it only started happening when they erected a mobile phone antenna on the roof of the nearby shopping precinct!!!

Sounds similar type of problem to the wireless network that b9bmp was describing too!

B,

Thanks for the info,

Both times it happened we too have been at home. We tried all sorts to get the alarm to work. We have a wireless network but it was switched off at the time. Funny enough the first time a neighbours Izusu 4X4 also had a similar problem that day. I am going to contact Customer services on Monday to see what they say about it. It will be a complete waste of time going to the garage as they will almost certainly not find anything.

If it happens again I have a network scanner and so I will try to establish if there is any other wireless network running locally although I have not found one todate. We have no other Mobile phone masts anywhere close.

I'll post again if and when I find out more.

Thanks for your help.

Bells are a ringing in my head....

This will make you laugh, about this time last year my father-in-law fitted one of those cheapy wireless doorbells to his front door from the local market, one of his mates came round when leaving his remote car fob no longer worked, Mr AA man came out scratched his head said don't know looks like a job for the garage, off his car goes on the back of the breakdown truck. Meanwhile the father in law wants to go out in his car guess what can't open it with key fob or start it, Mr AA man no: 2 comes out scratches his head another one towed away to the garage. Neigbour can't get his car out of the garage either, all in all 7 (known) cars were totally dissabled in a radius of about 1/4 mile not one garage could find anything wrong this went on for the best part of a week. By pure chance the father in law disabled the door bell to do some decorating and as if by magic all the car problems dissappeared...

Be warned wireless devices not just wireless routers do & have caused many problems with car entry systems. Theres heaps more to this story I won't bore you all with it but one of the guys cars went back to the garage no less than 3 times !!!!!!
