Hi, need some help. Convinced my mate recently to get a corolla g6 instead of a civic, but he will only get a model with rear brake discs not drums. I realised that i had no idea which model comes with discs and which with drums. So calling for some help from you guys. Any ideas???

I may be wrong and im sure if i am some body will put you right.

The GTi (like mine) also has rear discs. Not sure on the others.

85% of braking power is done through the fronts and as long as the car has a decent set of discs and pads on the front stopping power will feel quite good regardless of whats on the rear. It's only when you start looking at quite big powered cars the extra bite from discs and pads on the rear becomes noticeable.

But I can see where he is coming from a visual point of view.

Thanks guys. So not many models have rear discs? I take it only sports models have rear discs fitted. Does anyone know if a rear disc conversion from standard drum brakes is possible? How much work is actually involved in this process?

It can be done. Again you could get the parts for the model that has the rear discs and convert, But you would have a expensive job with little results, The only time id say it is worth up grading from drums to discs on the back if you beefing up the power out put of the car big style. For example check out AE111SR's rolla and his web site. You will noice the car has been transformed and its around about now that he is talking about his rear disc conversion. There are so many better things to spend your money and time on before you get to doing the rear brakes.

Yeah checked out his website. HE has done alot of work! probably one of the more powerful ae111 corollas online i think. Interesting to read that he said the engine mountings of the 4age 20v from the ae101 levin will fit as they are from the same floor pan. i think i will do that engine swap in the near future. It seem money well spent. The reason my mate wants a rear disc brake conversion is because the nutter hand brakes around corners. As he watches alot of initial d, but he is fast doe i cant think of a faster way he could go a round the corner without handbraking. I personally think his crazy! <_<

Hi

I am a Corolla G6 owner. G6 come with Real Disc brakes as standard. Same for G6R.

Not sure about SR model.

When I look into buying the G6 I have found a very weird thing with insurance price and it may be the same for your mate . the G6 is more expensive on insurance than the G6R and the G6R is better spec and also rarer.

:D

Yet 5 years ago I saw a G6 with rear Drum brakes for sale at a Local Toyota dealers forcourt, I know for sure it had drum brakes because I was looking at the car with a view to buying.

As for SR models i've seen some with Rear Discs and some with Drums, it is only the G6R that always has Disc all round in the AE111 range to my knowledge.

hummmmm..........Maybe the discs were updated later on? I have also seen the SR model having drums/discs which is the reason i came to ask on the forum to ask for info. <_<

I'd be suprised about the insurance being more on a G6 as it is a 1300cc enginge and a G6R is a 1600cc engine

I've done the rear disc conversion on my 1993 AE102 saloon using AE101 Levin parts. All E10 & E11 rear brakes use the same axle carriers, 266 mm diameter discs, and single piston calipers. Actually, AE92 GTi (U.S. GT-S Coupé) calipers will interchange as long as you use AE101/AE111 brackets. Still need the proper proportioning valve and handbrake cables that aren't seized... but such is life.

The conversion is !Removed! simple so long as you have everything from the rear axle carriers out, the proper brake hoses and handbrake cables. Took me and my friend (a ZZE110 owner) about 4 hours total to do, but that also includes us putting the calipers on the wrong sides and long breaks in between.

My G6 is a 1997 model and has drums at the back, and that was the first year it came out. some later year models had disks.

On the Ae111's the only ones to have rear discs are the G6R and the later face lift VVTI SR

The G6 may have become more expensive to insure on the basis of insurance history. Insurers will look at past claims. AS there are more G6's on the road and are more likely to get into the hands of the less experienced drivers because of the engine size, more are getting pranged and written off. Thus the insurers bump up the price. God I hate working in insurance Ive become so boring

Still there in 2021? I have a few questions. Why should the proportioning valve be changed? because the rear disks have a different behavior? What about the handbrake cables? Why should I replace them? Thanks
