but i have no real pull till i hit 3500 rpm? this makes overtaking at 60 a drag, is this a common thing? or am i driving a flat gti?

power starts at 4000 rpm with the 2 litre . take it to 40 or 50 in second , third upto 70 or 80 thats how to drive a celica .

empty the tank refill with optimax reset the ecu and keep it on optimax.

You`ll find that most twin cam engines are relatively gutless below 4k. They thrive on revs. :D

The gen 5 runs less cam than the gen 6 engine, so it is more flexible at lower rpm. But you can't really expect overtaking power from any 4 cylinder/2 litre engine at 2400 rpm. Especially a multivalve.

Also, 2400 rpm sounds a bit low for 60 mph. Most speedos read on the high side, so you could be doing less than 55 when it reads 60. At these sort of speeds, you need to drop it down to 3rd and give it some beans, the 3s-ge really starts working well at about 4.5k and is really on song around 5k.

Don't bother putting optimax in a 3s-ge, it's only a benefit with the turbo engine.

My speedo reads about 3750 rpm at a calibrated 80 mph, so that works out about 940 rpm per 20 mph. In that case at 2400 rpm, you will only be doing 51 mph. Assuming both our rev counters are reasonably accurate.

My Gen 5 does about 70mph at 2800rpm but it is an auto so the gearing may be different and it is an import so it has a replacement mph dial which may introduce a small error. I reckon it is reading about 5mph less than it should as I was alongside a car with an LCD speedo the other day, his read 70mph and mine read 65.

I agree with the rev range suggestions though, it is happy above 4000rpm. The auto box when in 'PWR' mode wont shift up until it gets to at least 6000rpm! Love it!

Yeah, autoboxes are totally different to manuals (true for all practically all cars). The celica auto has 4 gears and a torque convertor, manual has 5 speeds and direct input. Auto and manuals just can't be compared in terms of revs per mph.
