Morning all -

Has anyone had problems with surface rust on new (late 2004) avensis wheel nuts.

Dealer has replaced them once "out of good faith" but says that Toyota UK know about the problem but it is not a warranty item.

Cheers & happy new year.

DOn't you beleive it.

My T3x Wheel nits were corroded when I picked up the vehicle. I noticed it and the dealer replaced them straight away.

A few months later they corroded again and again the dealer replaced "under warranty", and touch wood these second pair have been fine ever since.

Another point is the old faithful of the disc brake hubs corroding (ths is not just the Avensis that is affected by the way).

My looked like a 5 year old car in a matter of weeks, so I complained and the dealer told me that Toyota were working on a solution to maintain the zinc coating on the discs. A week later they contacted me and arranged to have all 4 discs replaced under warranty (the car was only 4 weeks old at the time). It's now 10 months old, and I'm happy to report that these appear to be fine and look as good as new. Toyota did tell me that some of the more agressive acid wheel cleaners can strip the zinc coating in a matter of minutes !! As I don't use these products it's not a problem for me.

Regards

Andrew

That's interesting - checked this morning and the replaced wheel nuts are beginning to corrode again (looks like brake dust, but is surface rust).

Tell me more about the dis brake hubs - do you mean the discs themselves, since I've noticed that they corrode badly when the car is not used for a couple of days. I've a 91 Mazda (with original discs) that looks better even after a couple of weeks not been driven.

Cheers.

Eamann.

You people have just explained something for me.

Recently I was looking at a 5 month old (and 3000mile on the clock) Toyota Celica, just out of curiosity on a Toyota Dealers forecourt and noticed the brake discs were a disgrace. I know the car had been standing but the disc metal actually appear to be scally like heavily coroded metal, plus the wheel nuts were tatty looking and as for the exhaust system  it looked like it was a five year old system.

Eamonn,

Just to clarify, I'm not talking about the disc face, but the hub that the wheel bots attached to.

I'm not surprised that the disc surface corrodes after a few days, as every car I've ever owned did the same. In fact my previous Ford Focus was the worst of all. They could rust up in just a day parked at work if it was raining. But it's quite normal and as soon as the brakes are applied for the first time, they are scrubbed clean again.

The hubs are another matter though. I've just seen a 54 reg (that's a September 2004 onwards registation) Toyota corolla, where all 4 of the Disc Hubs were entirely 100% covered in Brown Rust. Not a problem if you have wheel trims, but if you have nice shiny alloys, it seriously spoils the look.

Regards

Andrew

I've had this too eamann. Car is only 3 months old too. Did you get them changed over ok by the dealer? Mine is a company car, so don't know how easy they will be to deal with. Why do they not change them over for the old ones!!
