Carina Gearbox Problem

I have recently bought a 1997 Carina E GS 2l Turbo diesel estate, there are a couple of problems, the main one is that it wont stay in 5th gear. It goes in and if you keep the gear stick pushed in it will stay and when coasting it stays in but as soon as you press the accelerator, you can feel the gearstick pushing back and if you let go it comes straight out of gear. Any suggestions or has anyone else had the same issue.

Also the abs light is on all the time. the brakes work fine but the light is annoying, so has anyone go any ideas what it might be or how to disconnect the dashboard light.

Many thanks

Tom

5th gear usually wears on outer teeth, replacement of the 5th gear would help with the jumping out of gear problem (toyota tech) abs could possibly be a speed sensor. best to get it checked out.

Gears common on UK built models. Cheapest option is get a 2nd hand box from a breakers. Toyota will charge around £400 for repair.
