Interesting Comparison

today I've been trying to nail down the source of my vibration when driving over 60mph. I get a vibration at 70/80mph and it wears off at 90/100mph. This to me tells me my wheels are not balanced.

So I have them balanced and the alignment done by laser on all four wheels and although it's improved it slightly I have still basically have the same problem.

I'm running 205/40/ Avon ZZR tyres on 17's.

today I swapped the alloys round and still the same vibration, so then I removed the alloys completely and put my old standard alloys back on which I think are:

185/60 on 14's

Well first of all I weighed them and find that the 17's weighed in at 17kgs and the 14's weighed in 12kgs each, so the acceleration is greatly improved as you can expect.

The handling is very poor in comparions as is the stability of the car, easy to whip the back end out and doesn't feel very stable at all, even with a -30mm drop. Ride comfort is much improved as you don't feel the bumps in the roads as much due to the greater profile

So I think I'll look for compromise between looks, handling and comfort in a new wheel as I feel that my 17's have been damaged or wharped by hitting a huge hole in the road a few months back which I thought had taken out my tyres it was that hard. Possibly go for some very light weight 16's on 195/45 tyres

Does anyone else experience any level of vibration using 17's on E10 corolla?

The car is on standard alloys for now and once I know if I'm selling it or not I'll sort the wheels out.

well youve done all the necessary checks so id personnaly but it to a buckled wheel

best way to check it for buckle and run out is on a set of centers and using a dial tester...

not many people have access though. alternatively, have the tyre removed and then roll the wheel along a lino floor ie ya kitchen and see if it 'bobs' or goes round a corner

Well from memory I remember hitting one huge pot hole in the road from road works that had left no signs in the night...........thanks for that.

Hit at around 30-40mph and I thought I'd blown the tyres out and I can remember another time again due to road works and no warnings of a dip in the road which gave them a good bang too.

Car looks very odd on 14's at the moment, have to look around for some light weight 16's or 17's
