My 1997 Hiace Powervan has replaced my last Hiace (non powerevan) and has dissapointed me.

It has just covered 3000 miles since a complete engine rebore / reconditioning / pump reconditioned 12 months ago.

It seems to be quite pokey as I would have expected - quite economical - I log the fuel put in and mileage accurately on Excel - it is giving 31 mpg at present - usually about half a ton of payload .

When started from cold, I let the heaters do their job, turn the key when the light goes out and leave the engine ticking over to clear the frost (if any) and warm up the oil before setting off. However my drive is now becoming a major health hazard with carbon / soot / oil / filthy water stains from the downward pointing exhaust. This has not happened before with other Hiace diesels of higher mileages.

The van is well run in but I have not found anyone who can give me a reasonable answer yet !

Anybody got any ideas pleas ?
