I was thinking of removing the dizzy cap tomorrow to clean the contacts. I plan to replace it soon but for right now thats not an option. Im pretty sure that the original one's contacts are pretty grubby by now.

So:

1) How does the sucker come off?

2) Whats the best thing to use to clean the contacts

3) Anything I should be careful of?

Cheers

piddle easy to remove. should take you 20 seconds to undo the two screws and then gengle pull the cap off ;) .if youre taking the HT leads off it first, make sure you know which one goes where for when you put it back on.

I dont know about cleaning the contacts so ill leave that for someone else (maybe wire wool, wet & dry ???)

edit - be carefull of the rubber washer around the dizzy cap, make sure it comes off cleanly and doesn't get snagged when you put it back on...

could I leave the leads plugged into the dizzy cap when I take it off?

I could clean the contacts leaning over the car? or not?

Also do I need to disconnect the Battery or is this not an issue?

No need to disconnect the Battery, just make sure the ignition is OFF

To clean the contacts just scrape them with the side of a screwdriver or a knife. You may find there is a layer of crap built up on them, just scrape that off. It may be worth taking off the rotor arm while you're there and clean that up too. The old trick with them was to polish the edge (that runs against the contacts in the cap) on the sidewall of a tyre. It cleans the edge without leaving sharp edges and doesn't take off too much material that you might if you used wet and dry.

The cap has got numbers on the top of it anyway, so just follow them when you plug the HT leads back on. The leads should have numbers on them too.
