When i start my car up from cold (int the morning) there is a very strong petrol smell in the exhaust fumes. Is this normal? It's only started doing it since i started using optimax... this shouldn't effect anything though should it??

OK 2 things to double check (other than the completely obvious) 1. the fuel filter might need replacing.... 2. check the flexi hoses and fuel lines these could be beginning to show signs of age and be starting to ..... !Removed! hell i forgot the word now).. means deterior... rotting away a wee bit lol... can't beleive i have forgotton the word i a tyrefitter and use it nearly every day lolol

EDITED: perish lol :)

(would have kept me up all night if i hadn't remembered)

It's prolly running a little on the rich side, certainly when the engine is cold and the cat not up to working temperature yet, hence not yet adjusting the air/fuel ratio as it should. Maybe combined with the air filter being a little on the dirty side enhancing the effect.

My first thought was that it could be a bit rich... anybody know a quick way to solve this? Or is it a "Oy, MrT! Fix this!" Job?

There's not really a quick fix for this, not even at MrT, and it's also not something that would bother me unless it would be running pig rich under heavy load.

On the cars which i have driven that are running rich you tend here a "pinking" sound wen u put the foot down... dunno if you get that on the yaris mine doesn't have that problem.

I went out Saturday and the girl next to me said she thought she smelled petrol

I didnt notice but sometimes I have noticed a slightly burnt smell ( more like petrol not oil ) This seems to be if the window is down and ive been driving quite hard . Also used 98 octane instead of 95 and thought it was that but still had it before with the 95 octane . isnt that strong , just a whiff of it

HAd the car a year and done 25 ks . Ive put it in for a service so if there is any thing wrong or that needs adjusting then that might take care of it .

Otherwise I dont know what it could be , maybe somebody knows ?
