Help! I have a 1986 Corolla. It will not start after it has been sitting a couple of hours. A squirt of starting fluid and it is fine. Runs great and restarts great. It has a carb on it. The fuel filter is new. Any ideas? HELP! Thanks!

What the hell is starting fluid?

How long have you had the car? Does it have an automatic choke. make sure you're not flooding the carb.

It might be a problem with the choke. If it's automatic it might be sticking shut. Try feathering/depressing the accelerator when you start the car. On a carb there is often a special starting jet to ritchen the mixture when cold. This may be blocked. It can be adjusted but I would advise you to seek professional help unless you know exactly what you're doing.

Look in the barrel of the carb when cold. try to move the butterfly gently. if it seems stuck to the side of the barrel poke it until it moves. then try a cold start. if the engine starts well you may need to file the butterfly - only do this if you are sure this is the problem and know what to do.

Starting fluid is a new style of ether...it makes for easy diesel starts in the winter as well as hard to start engines.

The choke works fine. I have about narrowed it down to the accelerator pump. The car runs fine once it has started, just a slight hesitation when the gas is blipped to full throttle.

The starting fluid tells me that it does not have gas and the fact that manually opening the accelerator does not squirt any gas into the carb.

Any other ideas?
