How old is the car, how many people do you carry, what sort of roads do you drive to get 40 ish, and which fuel do you use?

Bought it June 04, usually just me in the car driving on Motorways or dual Carraige ways. Tend not to go over 85 (shhh). Switching air con & cruise control on or off does not make a huge difference. its Diesel.

Well, I used to get 40-48 in my RAV4 D4D diesel , less if I went much over 80...... :)

I think that 40 mpg at 80-85 is pretty good for this engine... .

Round town I would get about 40-42. But it all depends how you drive 'em....

Driving in a d-4d new avensis at approx 140 km/h, which is about your 85mph, the diesel consumption is around 45 mpg.

Driving constantly at about 56 mph, I got over 60mpg.

you cannot compare with an audi as in my opinion the vw tdi's are a much better engine in every respect. which is also the reason why they cost more. my tdi gives a hell of a lot more mpg than my d4d, probably 55mpg+ compared to 48. sometimes i get 60mpg.

Just had my T3x D4D in dealers about poor fuel consumption. Apparently they can't find anything wrong. They said it was because of the cold weather!!!!

The average on the computer said 45.2 but in reality when I filled up after leaving the dealer and working out based on trip meter mileage I got 37.2 :censor: crap.

The dealer said they are allowed a 10% error on the computer but this equates to approx. 18%.

Any thoughts guys before I start really banging on either the dealers door or Toyota GB.

458.5 miles

56 litres of diesel

37.2 mpg

2004 T3x 13K on clock

You and the OP don't appear to be doing much better than people who have 1.8 and 2.0 petrol avensis.

From what I can make out the Avensis diesel is not as modern as the Ford common rail diesel, the new Honda and the Audi/WV? Perhaps this is why - the pertrols have caught up but other diesel makers have gone further in terms of mpg?

My D4-D, which I got in Sept 2004, is averaging 53mpg. I do about 20,000 miles per year over mixed road types and I am pleased with this figure. This is the trip computer figure but I did the manual calculation for the first month or so to prove it.

I do not drive it particularly hard and the tyres never seem to wear out either. I suspect this accounts for the difference in most cases.

Happy days

some of you getting 50+ in avensis thats what we all should get , over 40 mpg at least in Rav ,whats wrong why the vast range of mpg between you, avensis drivers .All the other engine makes on market have more power , torque ,quiter, and more MPG what is wrong with some of our cars ???????

Any one got any help from dealers ?

My 2002 D4-D gives me about 47 mpg indicated for tootling around town and the occasional high speed motorway dash. On more open roads I get about 52 mpg.

My father who had the car before me was getting about 56 indicated driving on open country roads.

As an aside the original front tyres were replaced at about 36,000 miles, the original rears are still there at 47000 with about 4mm tread according to the MoT results, but have apparently gone "out of round" leading to a little bit of vibration through the car.

Only quibble with the car is the pulley problem reported in topic

well iv got a 2000 avensis sr d4d and it is doing 47-48 mpg usually and that is mixed roads and usually "making progress" if you now what i mean!!!! i did do a week driving striclty to all speed limits and it did 55mpg (i do over 400 miles per week).

as for the comments on vw tdi's being better i think some ppl are a either looking back at there old cars with rosy tints, or are pretty well misled!!!! my bro in law has a 04 reg gt tdi 130 and it is noisier at idle than the d4d (by his own admission) . im also not sure but i think the vw unit is also sohc 8 valve whereas the d4d is definately dohc 16v and considering the hype that goes with them about golf gti performance, its not that much quicker!!!!. the only thing that the avensis is lacking is a 6 speed box coz it revs to hard at 70,80,90 etc........

o and for the ppl in derby to bolt em together better coz it rattles inside from numerous different places! doesnt sound like the new one has resolved these issues!!!

For what it's worth I get about 50 mpg on motorways and about 45-46mpg around town/local driving. It is noticeably worse if performing short journeys in cold weather which is what you would expect. On a motorway trip I get over 500 miles range before refuelling.

I'm about to go diesel so this interests me. Over 18000 miles my current 2.0 petrol has given around 38/40 mpg on a mixed run with around 23/25 in town traffic. Overall for my driving I reckon about 27/28 mpg which is fair but not outstanding.

Economy isn't the only reason for a change - the petrol 2 litre isn't especially flexible, smooth or torquey, though the gearing seems high and maybe this doesn't help. Trying a diesel I found the low and midrange torque much more useful for overtaking without needing to drop at least one cog and the in town mpg was well over 40.

Desmond22, your comments about your economy are interesting since I've recently bought a 2.0l petrol. I've averaged 28mpg over the 1200 miles I've driven and thats a good mix of town, motorway and a 200 mile round trip to Taunton the other weekend.

Comparable with your stats maybe, BUT mines an auto box !! Agree with you on overall responsiveness of the engine - I find it takes a little while to 'wind up' but you can soon reach the legal limits without realising it.

Jim

p.s. only wish Toyota would bring out an auto diesel variant like some other makes.

Hi Jim

I agree about the lack of auto on diesel. Did try an auto 2.0 petrol and quite liked it but the same engine issues were there. My old 1.8 Carina was not that much slower, much more economical and needed the same stirring to get up and go. Having said all that my 2.0 has been a relaxing car especially on the motorway so I'm not really complaining, just trying something different. :)
