After A Gen 6 Celica

Hello everyone, this is my first post here so please be nice!

As you can probably tell by the topic title I'm after a Gen 6 Celica, either the 1.8 ST (cheaper on the old insurance) or a 2 ltr GT model. I'm looking for anything P reg or newer really, and I'm not bothered about the power (that's why I'd prefer a 1.8)

What I need to know is what you guys would consider to be excessive mileage for such a car?

For example there is an S reg model with 76,000 on the clock going for £4,500 on the autotrader site (private sale).

What sort of problems can I expect if I buy a car with say 70,000+ on it and are these expensive to put right.

Any advice you guys can give me on what to look for and what to avoid would be much appreciated! :)

mileage means nothing if it has a full T s/h.

£4500 should get u a low mileage P reg in excellent condition.

imho, if you go for the ST you will wish you had the GT power, not slagging the ST but you will soon yearn for it, and if you get the GT you will soon want more power and wish you had a GT4, and if you get a GT4 you will boost the %$( out of it and wish you had just got a 3.0TT supra

just dont buy the first one, look for a bargain with everything going for it.

I wouldnt pay more than £3K for a 96 ST in good nick unless it was crammed with sensible mods and ICE.

best of luck fella and welcome to TOC.

The S reg for 4,500 sounds good - check it out and see if it's got service history. Mine is a higher mileage ST which I got from a garage it's a P reg but it did have full toyota service history and it was in mint condition with a brand new set of alloys and tyres.

I find the ST to be more than powerful enough for the driving I do, but I could see that on the motorway you may want a bit more oomph - the ST will comfortably take you up to 90, then it's a bit of a push to 100, then if you just keep it down a while it will eventually reach about 124 before you **** yourself because theirs loads of brake lights infront!! If you want to drive legally on the motorway then the ST would be more than powerful enough.

I found that when looking for the celica, the ST's actually cost more than the GT's, but I had my mind set on an ST - I wanted the highest mpg possible, and the cheapest insurance, it had to have a spoiler and alloys. Originally I was set on getting a silver celica, but I noticed that many of the silver ones had started to fade around the headlights at the front - ended up looking grey then silver.

I haven't had any major problems, except it tends to drink a bit of oil - not a major problem I just keep filling it up. The only thing with that is I can't tell you any way to notice when buying the car as it doesn't give off any symptoms - there is over one hundred replys somewhere on this forum - with people suggesting things to try with no luck!! You would need to test drive the car for a couple of hundred miles before you would notice.

Good luck it will be well worth it!

Hello welcome to the best club in the world imo. :P

LOL I agree with Carlosfandago (HI HUN) :D. I have a two litre GT-R and she is powerful and fast  but I would love to have a GT4 or a Supra :D The more power the better I say.

Keep your options open and dont fall in love with the first celica you see  I did that and I dont for one minute regret it. But I do wish that I had spoken to the Celica gang first. :)

If you need any more help you know where we are . :group-cuddles:

the st's can suffer terrible unknown oil loss and can lead to engine damage if not checked often ( its the old carina engine ) , where as the gt engine if it is the 3sge is more of a sports car power plant , fast reliable ,and its bombproof. In terms of insurance it will be negligible the difference between the 2 , but on the road there is alot of difference ,i say get the gt st202 with a 3sge engine.

I wouldn't say the difference was negligible, it was about £700 difference!! nearly double!!:eek:

Thanks for your help guys, you'll be pleased to know that there's one more member of the owners club now!

One small thing though, I was looking at the car today and in the boot the carpet looks like it's designed to fit around the spare wheel.

Is there a shaped board you can get to fit over the spare so that the bottom of the boot is flat? I know it sounds silly but my 91 corolla has one, so I thought i'd check with you guys. ("all he's ubikd about is a board for the boot?!" ... spot the noob everyone! :D )
