Advice Needed Please

Hi all, i'm new to this forum and need some advice on my mr2 i've just purchased.

Not ever owning a toyota before and not knowing much about them I hope someone here can help.

Its a 1990/G GT Limited (import). Got it very cheap but it has a small problem with the automatic gearbox. The last owner took it too a garage and had it stripped and checked and was told there was no problem with the actual gearbox. It will drive fine for about a week and then will not change up from 3rd. Was told this may be an electrical problem (solanoid)? Okay if you do a lot of town driving but not on long runs. Also the overdrive is tempremental and was told that sometimes dust can get into the switch which can cause this problem. I've looked into purchasing a new gearbox but at £800 would prefer to spend less getting it fixed.

Apart from that it is a lovely car and wish I had got one sooner. Engine sounds sweet and it drives fine.

Any help and advice would be gratefully appreciated.

how much did you pay for it? just trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to sell the car and put the added monies in another car?

Paid £550 for it with a years mot which I didn't think was too bad.

There is one advertised in the autotrader for £1800 so even if i did replace the gearbox I would hopefully get my money back but can't really afford that much at the moment.

For the small amount you payed for the car, Its defo worth while spending some more to find out whats wrong with it...

Do you know for a fact the previous owner had it checked

Also it would probably work out cheaper to fit a manual g/box rather

than try to find an auto for it.

Ps.... Welcome to TOC!

By heck - muchos cheap!

I believe Roguesystems are dropping a perfectly fine auto gearbox out of a G Limited in the next few weeks.

As far as I'm aware theres nothing wrong with it and it's possibly low miles too.

The car in question is having a manual gearbox fitted and then prepped for the forthcoming MR2 race series.

Thank you for the welcome.

Was wondering whether it would be worth changing it too manual as am not too keen on automatics but it was cheap. Is it an easy job too do? Not too worried about getting my hands dirty and my father can always help me.

Last owner paid £3000 for it a year and half ago and it has been sat up for 6 months. He is also a friend of my fathers so he knows what work has been done on it.

Also the problem i have at the moment is am waiting for insurance money too come through as my last car was written off (not my fault) and not sure how long that is gonna take. I will have to insure this one for now with zero no claims until its sorted.

You defo got a steel there!... I dont know how easy/hard it would be to convert it to a manual but regardless.. you got a bargin!

Knowing the previous owner and history is defo a good thing and if its been well looked after you would be best to fix her up and keep it...

we want pics by the way.. you aint allowed to post threads about your car if you dont supply a pic with it!

Thanks only 1 more too go.

Is there anything else I should look out for on the mr2s. I know I will be getting the cambelt done straight away as it is on about 80,000 miles. Think these need changing every 40,000?

I would defo put that as one of the main things to do asap... recomended change is at 60k as far as im aware... and generally for piece of mind it helps to sleep better in life...

Just make sure the garage have donr MR2's before as they are a bugger to do by all accounts.. :bookworm:

It's always one of the first things I get done when buying a new car. Had one go on me before on an escort which was quiet cheap to repair but can imagine what it will cost if it goes on this.

Anyone know of any local garages that deal with mr2s? Don't fancy taking it too a main dealer as they charge a bomb.

Rita

yeah... Mr T (toyota) have special prices for those who can afford new cars! :P

generally speaking the average cost for a N/A MR2 timing belt costs £100...

 £100. Oh well it needs to be done.

Replaced my old escort one myself but don't think I will attempt this one as the engine looks a bit tight too get round.

As far as i know its almost an engine out job hence the high cost of fitting one...

Looks like i'll be spending the day at work tomorrow phoning up a few garages.

I'd defo speak to rogue,

They are very well respected on here and have helped many people out with various problems...

I've emailed them regarding the gearbox so may call them tomorrow. Not too sure about driving all the way up their though with only 3 gears. Sure it's not gonna do the car any good.
