Transmission Conversion...

Gidday.

Im charlie, From down under, on the land of the long white cloud... Or in International Speak, New Zealand.

Any Who,

I have a 95 Toyota Carib Z Touring. My second from the Carib family. My first was a '83 AV II Model.

Any who, After searching high and low for a Manual 95 Carib, i came out dry, it seems they dont "do" manual in the Touring models, So i reluctantly parted with my cash and became the happy new owner of a 95 Carib.

Im pondering a few Performance mods As the 7A(-FE) block (when given a 4A-GE/GZE Head) has potential, but first up id like to make it a manual, as im not sure how a auto would handle it if the horse power gets to close/past 200. And a manual is much more fun to play in. :D ..

Has anyone some experience in Transmission conversions? Are these "REALLY" hard to do?

Do they get very costly?

What kind of Box do i need? The Gearbox companies in my locality have been less than helpfull in this area...

And lastly, any suggestions that you could make, to help me on my way?

TIA

Charlie

Was your engine offered with a manual gearbox in other cars?

If so, use the flywheel and clutch from there.

You will need a normal sized brake pedal, plus a clutch pedal and either the clutch cable or the clutch hydraulics.

I converted my Sera from Automatic to manual and it took an afternoon.

All the fixings between automatic Sera and manual Sera are the same, just had to drill three holes through the bulkhead for the clutch pedal mounts

Simply:

go to car being broken:-

- remove brake pedal (one pin with R clip)

- remove clutch pedal (one pin with R clip, three nuts, one spring)

- remove centre console (5 screws)

- undo gear linkage from floor (4 screws)

- undo cable tidy either side of bulkhead for linkage cables (4 screws in all)

- undo linkage from gearbox (2 R clips)

- drain clutch fluid

- remove clutch cylinder - one tube nut

- remove clutch hose / line - another tube nut and one clip

Fit all to my car, drilling three holes through bulkhead.

I'd already sourced a manual gearbox

- two wiring mods - one to bypass ignition cutoff if car out of park and to convert the reversing light switch socket from auto to manual spec.
