Uk Bhp Different From Jap Import On Gen 6?

Hello everyone,

I am new here and need a little help, i heard that the Jap import Gen 6 Celica GT has 210bhp, compared with the uk 170bhp - is this true?? I am just selling my Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC, which i love driving because the engine is great. I want a Celica GT4 GEN 6, but can't afford it (i have around £3700 to spend), so the GT is the next best thing. But, I am worried that it won't be as fun to drive as the prelude becuase the engine isn't as big. Can anyone shed any light on this?

If it is true that the imports have more bhp, then i will go for one of those. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

wont be as fun as the prelude but mine keeps up with them just about.

mines an 180bhp ss2

celicas are a better car and have a stronger engine... well unless you dont mind topping up the oil every minute of the day :D

Thanks for the advice. I did have a look at that posting with all the stats on, but it wasn't very clear. I didn't know if i should be looking at a ss1, or ss2 or 223 etc..

The comment about oil, does this mean they drink alot and i may have a problem with that if i get a celica?

hondas drink alot of oil... the celica imports dont :D

imports are ss1/2/3. they are different engines... simple :D

trouble is look in autotrader and most people just write celica 2 litre import as they dont know which they have got!

The JDM ss2 is pretty much the same as the UK GT. The power figures are slightly different because the !Removed! run 100 RON petrol (maybe higher compression ratio on the JDM cars?). SS3 has the vvti beams revision engine, thats how it gets the extra power. I think it is quite difficult to tell from the outside if a JDM car is an SS1, SS2, or SS3. The SS3 will have a red cam cover with the word 'beams' on it though.

I think the comment about oil was that hondas use more?

Edited to say that jap HP is measured in ps units and UK tends to use DIN. PS is very slightly lower, so jap stats are often a slightly higher power figure for the same real world HP.

Not all SS3's are Beams.. they are rare.

The SS3 is the higher horsepower engine and will have superstrut suspension as standard. SS2 had the option of superstrut...

The 3SGE ss3 &ss2 will have 175bhp or thereabouts. SS1 will have 140bhp

The VVti Red Top Beams will have 200BHP - as posted readily identifiable by the red top on the engine.

There's a couple of members cars on www.celica-club.co.uk for sale atm..

Out of interest, lots of BHP figures been mentioned so far in this thread, the UK GT is 168 to 173 bepending on year, JDM celica's engine figures are in PS not BHP, so a 180 PS SSII celica is in fact 177 BHP, so there could only be 5 BHP between a UK / JDM model ,and don't forget in Japan they have 100 Ron fuel and in the UK ( at best ) we only have 98 ron ( Optimax ) so that another few BHP lost to the JDM model.

this is the conversion PS X 0.98632 = BHP

This is a thread i done for the celica-club site, it could be useful here to

"One of the pet hates i have, is with sellers or import dealers , that don't tell you which SS model your buying other than its a 2.0, i'm sure the SS-I is worth less than an SS-II but you never see a price diffrence when advertised.

If you know your going to look at an import ,then you can tell the diffrence between the SS models your buying buy the following....

With the bonnet open, An SS-I will have 2.0 16V VALVE on the top of the rocker cover, and the toyota name and logo on the inlet mainfold. Second check, look at the chassis plate at the back of the engine bay, under the section MODEL it should read E-ST202-BLMGK.or if an automatic E-ST202-BLPGK.

If its an SS-II, the inlet manifold at the back/top of the engine should read,2000 TWINCAM 16,

Two possible model numbers on the chassis plate, if its a manual gearbox it should read....E-ST202-BLMVF or if an automatic...E-ST202BLPVF.

Sorry if this all seems a bit complicated, but thats the down side of an import, no dealer will ever give you this sort of information, because it could affect their profit ".

the max stated 177BHP should be acheivable with lower RON fuel than 100! Well, i thought the knocking was alot more likely to occur in the lower revs. Thats why remapping the ECU is so much better than turning the dissy because you can curve it so that its very advanced in high revs and not so in the lower revs... getting the best of both worlds then!

I dont notice any difference in mine with 95 RON fuel above 4,000 revs however it does hesitate below that badly because the knock sensor pulls back the timing.

Thanks for your helps guys, you really know your stuff!

The guide to differences between the ss1, ss2 and ss3 is really helpful, thats just what i wanted to know so i can get the right thing.

I am sure you will hear more from me when i actually find the celica i want.

Cheers
