Hi, I have just purchased a 1990 carina 2 xl 1.6 74,000 miles. The previous owner has only had it 6 months and did'nt know if it has had a timing belt done from the previous owner to him. How can I tell if it needs one and what milage is the belt changed at.

The timing belt should be changed at (no later than) 60K. It's a relatively straight forward DIY job.

I would remove the upper cover to reveal the belt. An original (and genuine replacement) will have 'Toyota' written and visible all over it. Copy parts are widely available and used - If your belt is a copy it is fair to say it's a replacement.

Where the belt has been replaced the dealer should have placed a sticker on the upper belt cover. If there is any signs that a sticker had previously been there, again its a good sign that the belts been replaced in the past.

The belts themselves will not usually show signs of wear. If in doubt get it replaced.
