Active Speaker System

Can anybody offer any advice on swapping the Double Din head unit for a single din on a Celica with active Speakers (superlive?).

I have found the factory amp under the front passenger seat which I assume runs the front door Speakers. Is it possible to fit a single DIN head unit and still use the factory amp, or will I need to bypass the amp in order to get the Speakers (which are powered by the factory amp) working.

I have seen the PC9-406 wiring adapter (for the active speaker system) from autoleads but it has phono plugs attached URL=http://www.stceurope.com/images/autoleads/pc9-406.jpg]PC9-406 Pic the head unit which I want to fit has only one pair of phono sockets.

Has anybody out there successfully used this adapter?

Cheers!!!!

Good luck with this. When I had my Gen5, the head unit was in a right mess. All the wiring for the superlive system was in place, but someone had run parallel speaker wiring from the HU to all Speakers. They'd made a terrible mess of it.

I tried getting my sony HU to work with the amp - I had it working, but it kept cutting out after a few minutes and discharging through the Speakers - a really high pitched squeaking noise.

I couldn't find much info, most of the posts I found on the forums just said 'it's crap, rip it out'... Not much help, I know!

I've got the wiring diagrams. You can find them Here

I ended up taking mine out. The amp is under the seat, as you know. There are three looms which run under the centre console to the back of the headunit. There's three connectors there, one which runs 12v acc and ignition to the amp, one which returns 12v to the HU, and one for the Speakers.

It's fairly easy to identify them once everything is out, and you can just connect your headunit into the existing speaker looms, bypassing the amp.

If you get yours working, I'd be interested to hear how you did it!

Craig.

Cheers Craig,

Those wiring diags are extremely helpful! Very nice Gen 5 by the way ;)

Luckily my wiring has not been touched and I am hoping I can use the correct adapter to get the amp working with a single din replacement head unit as all the audio outputs from the existing HU go straight to the amp then off to the Speakers.

Time will tell... Will update when I get any further. First I need to source a replacement speaker for the door Speakers as they have perished and the edges of the cones have crumbled...Maplin I think.

Thanks again!

Does this look like the one you used?

Cheers.

Don't know if this helps at all, but my Sera has a super live surround system in it. Aftermarket head units can be fitted to the Surround amp with some crafty wiring, but without the original head unit in place you lose a lot of functionality from the surround amp. So no real gains to be had by doing this.

No idea if it's the same on the Celica though.

yeah winstonitis, that the one i used, just read that the head unit your after only has 1 set off pre-outs, guess you'd have to choose between the front or the rear ones working.

just so i've got it straight in my head, this is the 10 speaker system we're talking about?

i think the amp runs all the Speakers, not just the door ones aswell

i'm just waiting till winter then all 10 Speakers and single amp is getting replaced with 2 sets of componants and 2 subs run by two amps and probably the same HU i've got just now. goingto be great fun to try and re-inforce the door cards to take the subs, considering just putting mid's in there and just a simple boot install but then only time will tell

Sounds like you are going for it GTForbes!

I realised that my wiring has probably been modified as the amp is not in cct (I can disconnect one of the plugs and I still get sound.

Gonna try and wire it back in to run the door Speakers only after swapping the original door Speakers with coaxial ones (thanks for the tip crashbang!)

Oh and need to replace the rear Speakers too as one keeps farting when I listen to Talk sport on MW.

Craighann - Good to see another GTR in South Wales... Saw another at local Tesco's in Chepstow last week.

fitting the subs should be easy. when you take the door cards off the is a large plastic Speakers surround that screws to the door, just cut the back outta that to make way for the larger magnet in the sub

i too have the ten speaker system with amp under the seat,

i changed the double din to single and it was a nitemare

evenutally bought a loom that converts pre outs to speaker cable and wired it that way into the head using the pre outs.

worked fine, but all the Speakers are mashed ( 14 year old nearly?)

so summer time ill be replacing them funds permitting
