Mot

Ok I've got to get my tax for the end of the month, luckily I decided to get it a few days early!

Anyway I can't find my MOT certificate anywhere. I keep everything in a draw and it's just not there :(

I still have the sticker in my car which says it is due 6th April 2005 but the last time I remember having the certificate was whilst getting tax 6 months ago!!

So it looks like I've got two choices:

1) Find the place it was done at (was done when I purchased the car) and ask for a copy making (atleast 10 quid - just for 2 months MOT)

or

2) Just go and get another one done

Now I would normally go for 2) straight off, but my Windscreen got a tiny chip in it the other day :( and I am presuming it may fail because of that??

I just checked my policy with directline (tpft) and they don't cover my windscreen :(

Does anybody have any experience with whether a windscreen will cause an MOT failure?? I don't notice the chip whilst driving it is right in the middle horizontally and vertically and only very small.

Also does anybody know what sort of cost it is to have them "repaired" and if that would get it through the MOT??

:help:

Chips or cracks in the windscreen directly in front of the driver, in the area swept by the Wiper Blades, are acceptable if they are less than 10mm in diameter. In the rest of the swept area, up to 40mm damage is acceptable.

Official stickers (parking permits, tax disc etc.) in the swept area in front of the driver will result in a fail if they are more than 10mm in diameter (40mm elsewhere).

sotal if you know where it was last tested you can get a copy made for half the original test fee. - marc

quick tip ,if possible put smaller Wiper Blades on the car if its in the sweep area and more than 10 mm wide.

it's about 7-8mm directly infront of the handbrake

so I'm going to hope it's ok - hopefully get it mot'd tomorrow

cheers marc

*UPDATE*

After 6 hours of searching, I eventually managed to find it! It was in a rucksack I must have used on that day! You know what it's like when you get a new car! You don't really care about all the bits of paper - you just want to drive it!!

Thanks for setting my mind about the windscreen though, as the MOT is still due in about 2 months!

Might still be worth getting it repaired tho. A bit of frost in there and you could be looking at a new screen. :( I think they do those resin injection repairs for about £30. Cheaper than a new screen.

Sound like you need to buy a box file, to keep all your docs in one place :D

Well Fingers crossed - I will take it for it's MOT 1 month early so that I can get 13 months MOT on it, if it then passes I will leave the windscreen until after my insurance changes - I will make sure I get one with windscreen cover next year! Then either get it fixed with resin for free, or lean on it to get a big crack, then replace it for £40

Just while we are on the topic though, of things that might fail on the MOT, I had a friend (who works with cars but doesn't do MOTs) check the car over and he said the rear light may fail as on the rear drivers side there is a tiny chip at the bottom of the indicator which could let white light out.

Question 1) is that true? when I look at it at night it doesn't look to show any white light out unless you stick your eye under it.

Question 2) would putting orange bulbs in fix it?

Failing that I was just going to take the light unit out and get some plastic magic (or something like that - it's a chemical solution which sort of melts plastic) You file a peice of plastic which matches in colour into the liquid then fill in the hole (turns into like a paste) - Do you think that would do the trick???

Provided it doesn`t actually emit any white light it`ll be ok. Probably your best bet would be to get a s/hand cluster from a breakers. I`ve seen some of these plastic repair kits and the results tend not to look too pretty.
