Petrol

I'm curious to know is there any real difference in the different brands of petrol you can put into your car?

Subjectively the UL brand brands of Shell and Texaco seem to make the care quieter and more responsive. Whereas TOTAL; TESCO, and Esso seem to make the car struggle.

I've tried that super expensive Optimax and Super unleaded Texaco and there is definatley a noticable difference in the performance and fuel consumption ( better ) but its an expensive option,

I have the 2.0L T Spririt Auto 2003 which uses theslightly higher compression engine and therfore would prefer the highter octane rating of the Super UL but at 30k miles per year the £££££ take precedence.

any comments..................

Horses for courses mate , if its performance your after stick with optimax if not stick to 95 ron regular , alas i have to use optimax all the time IMPORT you see , but my car just isnt the same on unleaded 95 ron.also when running an expensive motor you cant be worried about fuel costs it undermines the whole experiance.

people who yarp on about fuel costs should go to diesel

I use BP Ultimate Unleaded which is 98 Ron in my Yaris..it's a 1.0L engine but at the moment has done 275 miles and is 3 bars of petrol left in her..I certainly notice a better acceleration with it. The price was something like 87.9p when I filled her up 2 weeks ago

Talking about Diesel

I find no difference what you put in apart from Shell which always gives me around 5mpg less.

If you are really concerned about money, make sure the rest of the car is up to scratch (tyre pressures, clean, windows closed etc), then realise the largest cost is depreciation !

Cheers

I drive a 2001 Avensis Vermont 1.8 VVT-i and am very pleased with the petrol consumption. It was a revelation after getting around 26 -27 mpg from my Mondeo.

However, in the quest for greater economy, can anyone tell me if they have fitted the device available from CTech3000 (CTech3000.com) which is claimed to reduce consumption by at least 10% and, possibly up to 22%.

This system looks/sounds good - anyone got it fitted ??

I can't speak to how fuel is made for Britain, but in the U.S. all these brands use fuel from the same refineries. The only difference between Shell and BP and ExxonMobil is the additive packages they use. Some people will swear one brand makes their car run better than another, but given the facts that is unlikely.

Higher octane than your car is designed to use, also will not give any more power incidentally. It can even cause problems in some cases. Best thing is to use what is recommended, nothing more.

As far as derv is concerned, the storage conditions are more important than the brand. I know from the 4 years I drove a Volkswagen Jetta (Bora) TDI. You don't want to use fuel from a much older station or from a pump that is in the back of the lot and looks like it doesn't get alot of use. Diesel fuel can get water and contaminents in it when it stands for a long period, old tanks that have been in the ground for 20+ years can have rust or even algae in them! The best thing to do is get your derv from a newer station that does alot of business. I went where the trucks went when I could. truck stops have constant turnover so the fuel is always fresh.

No, I am highly suspicious of this sort of thing. There have been many alleged "fuel saving breakthroughs" over the years and every one of them winds up being proved a fraud in the end. If they didn't they would wind up being in common use and the technology adopted by the car companies, don't you think?

I say save your money.

did you ever see the fuel saving invention where you clipped magnets to the fuel pipes. the magnets arranged the fuel molecules so that they were more easily burnt. a chap at work got them for his gt40 and reckoned they worked. i did see them on his car so he did get them but i was very dubious with regard to the claims.
