Gen 5 Tyres

Hello all

Got a gen 5 celica (1990) and must say it's fun to drive :D

Looking at replacing the front tyres and here's my problem.

The current tyres are 205/60/R14. When I look for replacements the fitment seems really limited. Are there any options on sizes ie 195?? if so what profile to go for?

Any help much appreciated

the correct tyre size for that car is 195 x 60 x 14.

at the moment when your speedo says 30 mph youre travelling at 31.6 mph so be wary at speed cameras.

Thanks very muchly for the info, I suspected it might be 195's.

By the way I don't think my right foot is calibrated as low as 30mph so it's always a worry on the gatso's :D

According to the owners handbook, the correct tyre size is 205/R14. There is a limited choice this size of tyre, it's not a particularly common size. I've always used 205 width tyres, but I can't see any problem with using 195s instead. You will need to change all four tyres if you do though.

any size tyres are ok as long as they are on the same axle , no need to replace all 4.

Quite simply. Some will some wont. Depends a lot on the design. Thickness of the casting etc. I think the ones that do fit are marginal. I reckon your best bet would be to contact the manufacturers direct. Sorry i cant be more precise. :(

They look a bit chunky on the inside circumference mate. What make are they? Any idea?

195s on the front and 205s on the rear? You should really have the same width tyres front and rear.

yes in an ideal world , but by law its ok to mix tyres as long as they are on the same axle and of equal size , the mr2 and supra both run odd size tyres front to rear.

does that affect the space saver spare that some cars have?? They are obviously thinner and need to be put on the same axle. or is that OK because you not allowed to go over 50 kph with them fitted??

I was thinking the same, regarding space savers.

The MR2 and Supe need wider tyres on the rear to get the power down. They were engineered by Toyota to be balanced in that configuration. Mixing tyre widths front to rear on a FWD car would be cause an imbalance (might be unnoticable though), just like running wider tyres on the front of a RWD car would.

Ideally you want the exact same tyre on all 4 corners. I know it's not always practical though. But different tyres could behave totally differently, depending on road conditions. You could end up with a car that understeers in the dry and oversteers in the wet.
