Hi, I'm new to the forum so this could be an old thread. Does anyone know of a mod available to allow the back door to open any wider as the access is a tad restricted??

I read on the Net, that the reason why the tailgate, only opens to an angle of 75 degrees. Euro legislation states that both rear lights must be visible to following vehicles - even when the tailgate is open. But when the tailgate is open-ed to any more than 75 degrees, the spare wheel obscures the right-hand light cluster completely.

The solution involves sourcing a US-spec check-strap (part number 68650-42040) and fitting it in place of the standard one, this will allow the tailgate to open to 90 degrees.

If you did fit the US- spec strap.Technically, your car would still be in breach of lighting regulations if you parked at the roadside with the tailgate open at 90 degrees.

Nothing to do with European regulations just UK regulations, As all European (Except UK) allow the rear door to open fully just like North America. Daft UK regulation.

I mean we are concerned about a rear door opening fully and hiding one light unit yet in North America all RAV4's have a tyre pressure sensors and visable type pressure warning gauge on the dashboard to let you know a tyre is going down, mad !!

As a disabled person with a wheelchair to go in the boot area i simply had the original door stop extended, the gagage charged me about £30.00. it worked great also opened enough to get a house door in it lay flat, but got rid of the rav thru no real room in the boot when wheelchair was in situ.

Hi

Just fitted the longer tailgate bar to my XT5 5-door D-4D - amazing difference - so much easier to use the bootspace - I'm now entirely content with my RAV.

I sourced my replacement part from Brian Taylor (aka 'sparkydog') and I would strongly recommend him to deal with if you're after the perfect solution to the inadequate tailgate opening - he can be contacted at: sparkydog@fsmail.net.

The unit supplied was an original Toyota part and was cheaper than those being sold on eBay at £70 plus. Also, I found Brian to be really helpful and prompt with his service - short of actually travelling to my house to fit the part for me, he couldn't have been more helpful and informative. The instructions are a breeze to follow and it took me 'exactly what it says on the box' i.e. 15 minutes to fit the replacement.

Top man: Brian - thank you

Regards to all you RAV4 drivers out there.

I too have just fitted the long boot stay.

Obtained mine from "Sparkydog" in just 2 days (cheque and goods passing each other in the post - can't fault that for trust / service ...).

Part arrived at 8am in the morning and was fitted (in the snow !) in less than 10 minutes (really !!) after reading the very precise instructions (complete with photos) - did it alone and chocked the door using two brooms.

The difference it makes is unreal - great mod - at last I can use the boot area as I am sure the original designers intended (sometimes UK law really does suck).

I have fitted a flourescent reflecting sticker to edge of door and will avoid opening fully when parked on roadside though as I don't want anyone bumping into me ... !

Once again many thanks to Brian for the speedy supply of such a simple but worthwhile mod. :D

Can I ask how much the mod has set you back?

Yes, how much and are you related to this guy to try and get more trade for him? :o

No I am not related :o

I have only just started on TOC having previously been on LOC for a while with my Lexus.

Never posted a thank you like this before but felt it was worth it for the way I was treated - firm believer in giving credit when it is deserved - as well as dissing those who do not prove credit-worthy ...

Cost was £62.50 inc postage.

Reading MarkXT5's comments I am not the only Sparkdog supporter - and I doubt he is related either !! :P

I think I will post a thanks as well!

Pleasure - guess you have the mod too now ...

Must stop the mods now, list so far:

Triple washer jets (in place of the std 2 jet type)

Stubbie aerial

90 degree rear door strap

Origin b2 camera detector

Cutler spare wheel cover - to fit the Granite 17" wheels (another great supplier if anyone is looking for one (http://www.wheelcover.com)

Just a K&N filter to go for now - then Sat Nav when I decide how best to do it - Toyota unit or transferable unit ...

:D

Go for the Toyota Sat nav option easy 10min installation and will do more than any transferable unit

And only about 450 gpb on eBay

Thanks rowena461 - must admit that is my favoured choice - not seen any on eBay recently though - got any links in case I am looking in the wrong place ?

There was a thread on here last week but it seem to have disappeared - wonder where it went ?

3 jet, ooooooooh where did you get that?

(I am building up my paypal account for my back door mod, I need another £10 so far!)

Standard Lexus part - about £15 pr posted - various colours but I went for gloss black.

Fitted straight into bonnet holes but had to extend the tubing as the connectors are 90 degrees out.

Guess this means the Lexus fan spray types will fit too but unsure if the angle of spray is adjustable on those.

Think we need a new thread here - not exactly Back Door Mod discussion now
