Decat Regulations

Good evening everybody,

Whilst having my exhaust repaired last week by a 'specialist' (who did a god job by the way and saved me money) the woman doing the job said that I could replace the cat with a straight through pipe as it is an H reg on the basis that it is not mandatory for cars registered on a K plate or earlier....Is this true?

If so would there be a noticeable improvement to power and economy?

Cheers.

On 1 January 1996 petrol engine vehicles equipped with catalytic converters and

registered after 1 August 1992 became subject to the new CAT emissions test as part of the MoT. Only Green MoT stations may carry out these tests. Those vehicles registered prior to 1 August 1992 fitted with CATs are not subject to the MoT CAT emissions test. There are some vehicles registered during 1993 and 1994 which may not be catalyst equipped. . performance will be upped slightly removing it.Some say it makes it slower because the engine has nothing to push against as the straight through pipes can be too big a diameter.you could always try a decat pipe for around £70
